LECTURE ON THE \ TENETO OF CHRISTIAN I SCIENCE SUNDAY Continual from Pace Three * away, ami all thins* have become i new. Prejudice has given way to " . opcri-mindcilncs- . fear to faith, am) pride en^self-will have yeilded toj* meekness aniT trust. I remember^ a gooil woman, a former -patient, whom 1 treated and treated; fin-; 11 ally 1 discovered (hat what prevented her healing was her belief that if she was cured she would have to give ep his church. When , o I assured her that this positively * was not the purpose of Christian : f ' Science healing, but that her heal- n ing would , make her a better w ' Methodist or Episcopalian, her s thought immediately becamp recep- a tlve, and she was restored to h health at once. It. is wonderful ( u how the clouds and storm of a o stubborn prejudice gave place to h the sunlight und peace of an en- v lightened consciousness. When you S have heen made well and strong t through Christian Science, you will ( have only thoughts of love and gratitude for its discoverer. a Mary Uaker Eddy ' 1 became acquainted with Mrs.' 5 Eddy twenty-five years ago, and •' for fifteen years at frequent inter- * vals it was my great privilege to ' be a personal witness of her rare J virtues. As a former member of s her household, I can give first-hand 1 testimony upon the beauty and * consistency of her life. I believe 1 no person ever lived, except Christ ' » Jesus, who has loved humanity ' and sacrificed for humanity as ' Mrs. Eddy has done. Night and * day for fity years, without holiday or intermission she labored inces- 1 sanity for mankind. Her absolute reliance upon God was her most compicuous trait. Wholly fearless ; of criticism, above- re vilement, for- I 1 giving her enemies, with the true ] Christ spirit she pressed on over-j coming evil after evil. When once' : asked what she did and how she , stood It when she was so unmercifully maligned and persecuted, . she quickly replied, "Why, f will tell you what 1 do, 1 do as the tall grass does when the tornado passes over it I bend- and when the] storm has spent itself, I come right ; up straight again." Humility, patience and love have been the guiding stars of her life. The entire world seemed against her, but with indomitable courage, untiring persistence and Christly compassion, she worked unselfishly for her great ideal, which as she writes .was "to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science" (Misc. Writings, p. 207). Three Steps Necessary The strongest and most appealing claim of Christian Science is that it operates, that it works. But like an automobile whose engine won't' go unless it is given the right - mixture of gas, Chi ration " Science does not heal the sick or the sinner unless the mixture Is right. Here Christian Science dif- ' fers radically from an automobileinasmuch as the oil or mixture used is the :pure power of divine Principle, of Truth ami Live, a spiritual understanding that uncovers every valley of sin, ai d lays low every mountain of disease. The j human thought - passes through three steps or stages in acquiring, this power. And they are tie] same three stepo taken in winning any worthy goal. First, belie! second, faith, and third, under- 1 standing. Brief You take the first step, fur instance when you come to the lecture, or go to a practitioner -or read Mrs. Eddy's writings, because you believe enough in Christian Science to take the trouble to find oat something about it. But that is only belief. The lecture, etc., give you, we trust, sufficient hope belief, an^ to take the next step, and courage to strengthen your W® hope the Truth beard or read has changed your thoughts, and you are healed of some disease or sin. You are encouraged. Faith You have seen the proof, and, now have positive faith in what Christian Science can .do. Your ' uncertain beliefs has become a , surety- and you now have faith. | Bet you cannot atop here. Faith la really only a way station. Yet, aad to relate, there is where most Christia'.r. get o'f and settle down. And tbe> are not entirely to blame. They are like the old deacon who always began his long prayer, "Oh. Lord! we come to thee because, we've nowhere else to go." Their, faith has lacked something more vital to produce the greater works. ] James said, "Faith without works la dead." This does not mean that -/ the sweet faith of many Christians - has wrought no works whatever. But the signs and greater works that should follow them that really \

One moment faith is beauti-, l ful, active and full of hope; the 1 ; next moment it has turned to doubt % -fear and discouragement. Mrs. t Eddy likens faith to a pendulum 1 1 'swinging between the real and un-jl real, having no fixity. Ifuman j faith is blind. It is blind because j 1 it is personal; it is based" upon per- ; ] sonal material sense- and not upon 1 ' divine Principle. Blind fnith is the . I law without the gospel, the letter j , without the .Spirit, and the let'ir j t r'one, the Bible says, killeth. Hu- ( - man faith has lacked exactly what jt I Christian Science has come to sup- i , ! ply. It has lacked understanding. I, Understanding Understanding, is the backbone j i of faith, giving it strength and , i stability. It includes the good ir. ] t ! faith but not the bad. Faith will i no longer waver and be reversed 1 1 when it has expanded into under- , i standing. When you witness j i another pupil in mathematics get': his answer you have faith, but not j 1 until you learn the rule and work ( out the answer yourself, do you t understanding. It Is just so t with the problem of life. Christian i has come in the fulness of time to declare that the sweet : Christian faith of the ages- while honest and humble, has fallen short and has not satisfied because it has not iten supported by ' spiritual understanding the under- - standing of Co I to be the tlivine ; 1 Principle ot being, the understand- ' ing of Spirit, and of Christ, <-f and the real man, the understanding of matter, evil -and sinami the understanding of prayer, salvation and immortality. Spirit- , ual understanding is more than huknowledge. Human know! , e-Uc com.-rir-' the thinge within , thif limits of the five material I ; - res. This consciousness .-is spiritual understanding which , i casts out error and heals the sick. ['Thus Christian Science has opened

the way to eternal harmony and £ bv supplying, mankind vith spiritual understanding, ant' j therein lies its supreme and rerae- „ ] tical excellence as the Com* rter a j leading into all Truth. ]T lUailt Christians lacked -Spirit ml 1 UniV.--.tai d'ng | >*-lcn Jesu- i! The "many thi|gs" j referred to were many tilings . , ! about God, and many things about , j evil and sin. It has Uken een- , j tunes of human trial and exper- ( j to lift faith above a personal j and blind trust in God to under- ( stand Him as I-ife, Truth and Love- , the on* and • nly Mind, as thei" 1 1 divine Principle of being, as om- ( ] nipotent and omnipresent. In fact, ( ; no other way can God be known , . j as omnipresent and omnipotent. It . , taken centuries to understand ; as the one infinite Spirit, and i to realize the sequence of this fact, f i that man must be spiritual ami not i material.
