KIWANIANS HEAR - HUMOROUS SPEECH BY DR. 0. G. BAYLISS I.UlCI BOC'CELLl DELIGHTS MK>fWWlS WITH RENDITION OF APRIL SHOWERS Dr. David C. Buvliss proved hh».a humorist of the highest failure, In "his charming address delivered before {he Ocean City Kiwnnis C'iub, at their noon luncheon in the Hotel Normandie. With one anecdote after another, he kept his audience convulsed \ with laughter; and the resources seemed ^Inexhaustible. Not merely j . ■lid Dr. Baylies spin his yarn, but ' , he dramatized cleverly the charac- | tcrs represented. An old chestnut j disheil up in Dr. Bayliss' inimitable style, -betame/new and novel ami . unmlerfully amusing. , It must not Ire supposed how- • ever, that the speaker's address • was all of the lighter vein. Rather , -the hulnor was employed to punc- ; tuate and emphasize a speech, That cuntaincil food in abundance fpr' serious cogitation. Taking as a text or motto, for | his instructive address, the Kiwan- j is slogan, "We Build," Dr. Bayliss | enumerated four of the fundamen- i tal requirements in building, : t whether the building ho that of x the individual character, or com- f munity building. ( The first essential was oluca- s lion. Dr. Bayliss laid down as a f premises the truism, that men sec s in life what they look' for; that a t man's outlook was largely colored I by the moral 1 temperment of the 0 soul. j, "You cannot see the sun through s dirty windows," Dr. Bayliss de- ii dared. ,1 The School of Hard Knocks fur- e nishes valuable training; for the | g greatest lessons of life cnnr.at If j art, ui reel from books, but from ex-jj, pruence. Education le.l logically I J the s|>euker saitl, ' to the second j |, great essential in a successful life,is II. Achievement. Education sup-] plies the necessary power to |* j, achieve. One very valuable thought ! s Dr. Bayliss emphasized was, that ; j, human standards of measuring achievements, are by no means t| infallible. A person might live, com- |, paratively speaking, a <|uiet and p secluded life, in a quiet secluded I; place, yet accomplish more for the p general good of humanity, than j one living in the limelight ami pub- ^ lie favor. L Achievement, Dr. Bayliss conti?.- j u»H in onier to be of the highest £ quality, should be that of The p third essential, £ III. "Service. Kiwaninns claimed they were builders. All things whatsoever* should make a man's cony ibution to society, one of useful service. Beginning v.-ith education', passing through the stages of S acheivement and service, such a L life comes to the sunset of exist- t< ence in perfect ease. fi it transpired that Dr. David C. fi Bayliss is a Rotarian, associated tl with the fraternity in the city of d?
Baltimore. Spending the summer in Atlantic City, the people of that progressive city, immediately pressed the Doctor into service, as I chairman of one of the committees SI having charge of the forthcoming pageant. , Whereupon Dr. Bayliss launched into an earnest plea, that Ocean 'S City, and its Kiwanis Club, should ; If actively identified, and represented in the pageant. It was. the mddt valuable scheme of jmbiicity ever attempted, and Ocean City •" should reap its share of the benefits. He hoped to. see the city, the Chamber of Commerce, and the " Kiwanis Club, represented in the pageant in a manner worthy of r> themselves. •' Luigi Boccclli, the popular, blind s singer, was present at the luncheon Viand was prevailed upon to give a charming rendition of the popular •- "April Showers." i- ! Several members expressed e ( favor of being represente<l '• plans are being perfected accordingly. It further transpired, that the fund raised to provide a nurse * for the Seashore Home for Babies r and hail amounted to practically all that is required. t r' MINSTREL SHOW A very novel minstrel show war. I given in the Chapel at Fifty-fifth; - August 25th for the bene- ' s fit of the fund which the church 1 - trying to raise in order to ex- i tend its building. Instead of the ' t usual negroes the Rugglcs Family' - "The Bird's Christmas Carol"1 entertained the audience with jokes j - and songs. The first act was taken j » the story and showed Maw \ e struggles to get her brood ready] » behave properly at the "Great I I The costumes and the * acting were very amusing, nod I when the children came in lock j ' | step after repeated trials at enter- ] •j in an orderly manner there was ! | danger of having to rebuild the ' ; entire Chapel, for as the saying ■ ! "they brought the house ■ | A medley was surg, tnen ' I jokes were exchanged between and Peorie and various mem-' I hers of the tribe' told st-jries and! * ] sang.
