ijj Selections from Joseph Haydn'- ^ unique oratorio, entitled "The r K Creation," constituted the major part of the evening service, at thc( Firat Presbyterian Cliurcli on Sun- , •» day evening last. 'j "it may Ik- justly said- that ; ; Haydn's famous "clas^c, is the most ambitious work ever attempted by mortal man. Handel. Mo- ! xart and Mendelshonn clothed in > musical setting, various periods in the romantichlstory of the Hebrew nation, the three masters wrote biographical sketches in (long, of some of the most roraan- . tic personages, who ever crossed the playboards of time. 1 It was left however, to Hpydn's ; daring and inconvcntial genius, to attempt to write in musical form, the wondrous story of creation, and attempted to portray in harmonies, the Spirit of Omnipotence brooding over primeval- ne'jiliiH', and evolving cosmos out of the womb of chaos. Haydn was a Jew, and approached the stupendous task, with all the religious mysticism of the Jewish tempennents. While the words of the text are taken from the Bible, the spirit prevailing the ortario is prescriptivcly talmudic. Haydn borrowed the language of the Bible, hut retained throughout the work, tlie cryptic symbolism, and the curious personifications, of the bible of his faith Wnd people, the ancient Talmud. Despite the difficulties involved, in the colossal task undertaken • by this Jewish Musician, Haydn suej . eeeded perhaps as far as imrtal genius, can ever hope to aucceeo. Wagner, in his immortal Paraifal, succeeded not so well in reproducing the mystic symbolism, behind the story of the Holj Grail; although Parsifal judged purely from the canons of musical com position, is unquestionably superior to the Creation. Sir Edga: Edgar, in his deathless setting ,tc Newman's poem, "The Dream ol Gerontius," is perhaps the only other person, who has so successfully interpreted in musical form the element of the spiritual immanent* in nature, and nature': complex operations. 7"he only differcnic is that Edgar's interpretation of the soul - relation to God waa Christian while Haydn's intcrprctatiorvwwai Judaic. ' Vaydn begun his musical career approximately twenty years uftei

Influenced by the school „ of which Bach, is perhaps tlie most P' „ perfect exponent j111 n Haydn was essentially a mystic, hl •- for which reason, doubtless he Is -.- of all oratorioists the most «l»f- S n ficult to interpret. '• The selections given by the * d splendid quartette, were artistical- ° ly and beautifully rendered. Dr » •s Goebb at the organ, and Dr. Lips:o schultx, in his rendition of "Rolling » n, in Foaming Billows," however, ex- ri n, celle<l in giving expression to the " r- mysticism of a Hebrew- conception '' * of God, in relation to the inanimate " c, reation. ic To the Hebrew, matter was a n manifestation of spirit; all mater- t h. the spirit of God. The Hebrew saw f ,11 the imprints of Iehoral in all creav. tion. The ancient writers , * ' of Genesis while glorying in tlie , creative power, and majesty of hi: God, is also overawed by a sense j of the uwfulness of it all. God was ^ j so infinite, and man so finale. !p. The Hebrew's exultation is , m> J everywhere and always chastened ,lj'. j hv his consciousness of thn mystery tHl the imprint* of Jehovah in all crea,al : Dr. Lipschutz, has vocal oowees iL. : sufficient to have made the audl_ar torium echo, but with true srti-tic (n • intuition he gave a rendition that ,,f was superbly Hebraistic, lly Dr. Goepp's performance at the, is- organ was masterly. Never hat c •m, we heard the story of creition,. m- leaping out of the yawning gulf of! c's nothingness, so perfectly reproduced. bl- Organist and singer reached the il'si acme of art, in tlie anti-climax In- i iui, jtrodueed by. speaks. It is a song of rejoicing HI and thanksgiving, coming from .'he ||| heart of the barren earth, because it* ugly nakedness has been at last clothed with verdure green. It is as if the old earth were, like a child with a new dress, giving expression to her joy in a series of half hysterical chuckles and laughter. Miss I-ouise T. Corson caught spirit of both the recit and the aria admirably. Tbc light phrases suited her flexible voice and qualitjT'of tone most beautifully. She made the earth, leap, to kiss each vagrant sunbeam, and greet each dew-drop, that her mantle of green might the more beautifully grow. was' an artistic rendition. :'In native worth." the first created of the' human race, become conscious of their inate dignity and worth, as the lords of creation. ' Bernard Poland, very effectively portrayed this awakened conscious- | new in man, hfs powerful voice ' heard to great advantage. The trio, "On Thee each living awaits," was all that could be desired. The intonation was was rich, and the lights and shades of musical characterization, we!! well rendered. The repitition of the motilfk on the organ by Dr. Goepp. after each reiteration of the lament. "Thou takent their breath away, th#v vanish into dust," was thrillirtg and and searching. \ Horatio Parke's peculiar fdrmtoti--musical phrasing, is unquestionably intricate to be popular and efIt is possible to become so com- Jj plex in form, as to lose the appeal. The quartette, "Here life is, quickly gone," was a magnificent triumph in intonation. The singer* 1 escaped the many pitfall.'-, hidden'i ' in Parker's intricate harmonizing, 0 splendidly throughout. ' Mrs. Ida Taylor Bolle's rendition ji of "Earth's Turmoils ended nre,"i I was also a triumph against the . I 1 same difficulties. It was an aecotn- j E ' plished effort; nevertheless there 1 1 ' are a hundred songs that could he- | • named without hesitation, which] have shown the artist's voice and j a ; gift of interpretation, to furja 1 greater advantage. Unquestionably the most effee- , * five of their concerted numbers 1 was Gounod's "There is Merry." | ^ ' It breathed the spirit and suffused i j ' the atmosphere of the cathedral, | 1 and of the priesthood, into which ! " Gounod was prevented from enter- ! j : ing, to his everlasting regret. | f 1 The evening's service was a re- 1 a markable feast of sacred song. 1 J » I i ; PART DISBANDMENT !'
