TR0CLAIMIN6 THE ABOLITION OF TOLL BY W. E. WASSEY THE SPEECH DELIVERED IN TRANSFERRING HHJDGK TO THE STATE The abolition of the toll on the automobile bridge, being in our | judgment one of the most jmpur- . tant events in the hirtory of Ocean , City, we deemed the address delivered on the occasion by W. F. 1 Masse y, the Treasurer of the Auto-J^ mobile Bridge Company,* worths | of preservation, and a larger aud- i ienre than were privileged to l.ear I it from the steps of the City Hah. ( It i» worthy- for • ita intrinsic , merits, as an address, happily con- I reived, valuable a* historical data, 1 and of paramount interest from ( tbeefact that the speaker, W. E. , Maaaey, is largely responsible for I the fact that the bridge has been < proclaimed free. His perai stent effort* in _ that di- ( rection are well known. < The construction of the Automobile Bridge, was a feat of engi- ' neering, which reflect* infinite J credit upon the promoters of tlie j project, the contractors, the Sutton 1 and Corson Company," and the Hill J Dredging Company, and the engi- « neer R. L. Golf. , Begpn in June 1913, is was open- « ed to the public April lith 1914. i The unit, including the bridge and t the causeway, measures 10,390 feet lonft, with a width of 22 feet " on the trestles, and SO feet on fhe , causeway. ! The Automobile Briilge Company J performed a service of incalcual.le value to the city in erecting the , bridge: they performed a greater., aerbicr in faeilitatinK in every way I its epning free from toll to the public The foUowing is a transcript of , W. K. Massey's ProrHir.a.ion ad- , dress: Officials Af the State of New Jer- j Members of the Board of Free- ' holder* of Cape May County: Your Honor, representing us ; you do the greeted family resort , on any Coast or Shore. , My Colleagues, officers and directors of this now famous cooperation which i. about to write 'he , lost page in. ita short ami stormy tustory of 8 years, 3 months and 28 flays. To the visitors and the citizens of this wonderful resort, we ex- 1 press profoundly to you, our appreciation of your presence on thia most unique occasion. 1 pre** you all in behalf of tne Ocean City Auto Bridge Company and the very much alive Chamber of Commerce, under the able leadership of President Sutton. The last evidence of barbarism, as it has been termed by those in high and low position, is about to pass. My mind goes back to a certain Ex- President of the United States of America who was Governor of the State when legislation was needed to operate successfully the property owned by the Com- , puny we represent. It wu.- found that a new law was necessary. Then Gov. Wilson did not feel himself called upon to oon'ult the citiiens of this eity who were interested in the building of this automobile highway or consider ^ the possible benefits, but abruptly ■o

vetoed the measure with the comment tiu.'. 'toll bridges were barbaric and jiuch evi le ice-' of barbarian must not lie permitted to increase" in this State. A few days later the Legislature , of die Stale of New Jersey reconI vened arid a Democrat:? majority [ th^ti in both houses passed the bid over the Governor's veto. In due course it became law. <; ' Several of our goo I friemis w ho voted for the bill were a little pessimistic as to our ability to put over such an expensive proposition. . but seeing in it great possibilities ' they decided to give little Ocea.i City, a chance to do k big thing for itself t/A for southern New i 'Jersey. The challenge was quickly accepted and within six months plans and surveys were completed and iWds were submitted, but the actual •" building was held in abeyance for - about thirty days until our exact r financial status was definitely fixed. With a group of loyal men — I " doubt, your Honor, if you will find, • East or .West, North or South, a more loyal dtixenry — the project ' was carried on. Naturally in this ' statement we cannot hope that any • community can reach 100 per cent r layolty — R would not be possible , . or desirable— but it is so near that mark that I want to thank the, City as a whole for its magnificent ' effort -at times against great odds, but finally victors. At this point permit me to refer . the man we have often mentioned in connection with this - Com- ' pany. Mr. Henry D. Moore, its! ' from its organization to i this day .who above all others acI tually made the consummation of , plans possible. He led in this, as in many other projects in thisl eity. with a subscription of 360.-' of the bonds of the Company . and 111,000 to its stocks, out of a | total of 3262,800. ) What has it meant for this City ; . and the reaorts south of us? Will ^ you venture an estimate of its ' monetary valuf to this City? Canute closer contact, which cams . with the opening .lay between Ocean City and that greatest of all ' American' resorts, Atlantic City. - can this be appraised?
