County Fair Should Prove Ingentive In -Development Of The County's Resources IMPORTANT COMMERCIAL EXHIBITS FEATl RED. FA^M AND. STOCK PRODlCTsS-«^RDENING AND HORTI(T.'LTl"BK DEMONSTRATIONS

Those in a position to form com- ji parlso na 'declare that the Capo May „ County. Fair for this year, far excelled any other in the history of the institution. 1 Not only were there a irreater * variety of commercial exhibits, hut the agricultural and live stock exhibits were of greater quantity, ami a higher standard of excellence Q than'ever witnessed in the County ■ Fair. " j, Without question the fair hide -• well to become a factor of first rank importance, in the develope- ,, ment o fthe eouty's wonderful re- '• Barely a tithe of the County's k I resources are under cultivation and jj devrfffpement. The agricultural possibilities of the county are almost limitless, with a soil declared ,- by experts to be of unsurpassable fertility, anil a' climate remarkable for its equability. 0 The possibilities in horticulture are none the less. Several varieties of fruit which have become :-. staple articfc of food, may be> cultivated in the county to better advantage and at a lower cost far,; than they arc being cultivated successfully in other parts of the State. A very promising beginning was made towards utilizing the County Fair this year, as a medium of education. The booth exhibiting the results of vocational training T in agriculture, was intensely inter- Q csting, and hail been very instructively arrmhijpd. ■ For example, one table contain-, ed a collection of apples, the trees from which they were procured, having been indifferently or insufficiently sprayed. Near by another table contained an exhibition of 7 apples, drawn from trees seientif- c icaily sprayed, and carol for, fruit of a far superior quality and size. Some of the exhibits on display grown by young lads, were of a very high standard of quality,' demonstrating very clearly the advantages of the training and instruction received. This department must, in tfcr process of years, inevitably Increase both the quality and the quantity of the county's farm produce, and make farming one of the stable and most profitable industries of the county. Dr. Julius Way, Chairman of the Fruit Committee, and W. S. Thompson, Chairman of the Verfbtable Committee, secured this. year' the largest exhibit of agricultural produce ever seen in the county. Cape May County offers every! advantage also, to greater devet-; opement in poultry farthing. The

poultry exhibits were highly inter- , eating, as also were the pure bred 81 calves on exhibition. ® To Mr. Eibmrd Phillips, Chairman of the DWTy Committee, is due! A the credit for this new departure, ]n the ealves on exhibition having f been purchased through the Fre- H linghuysen Fund. Another booth of educational B value, was that in which demonstrations in Child Hygiene were } given. The old feeling of resentment, fostered by women in days 1 gone by, against demonstrations of } the character, us though they east j * a reflection upon them in the man- r agement and care of their babies J is fast disappearing, and mothers 1 all over the country are evincing j an eagerness to learn the latest , discovert' of science, which ministers to eMIif welfare. j filbert Chesterton is reported to 1 have said, that the day was not 1 far distant, when parents would ' be taking their children to zoological gardens to show them what a horse was like. The horse would become as txtinct as the Dodo, and 1 (ill farm implements would lie Hriven by v motive power. The interest taken in, the horse . races however, indicated the day is mueh further distant than Chesterton imagines. Some very fine examples of careful selection and breeding .one or two with evident strains of Arabian blood, covered the track in sensational time. Nevertheless motor-driven farming implements are of necessity gaining in favor, ami the automobile is fast becoming a necessity of life. This year's County Fair hail on display a variety of carv, and all : the minor requisites of automobiling. Notable among commercial exhibits were those of Koeneke Brothers of Wildwood, and of the m- T. 8. Goslin Lumber Company of Wildwood. No fair is complete without its gamy of skill, -over which young Botpeo might demonstrate his

prowess before the wondering eyes of Juliet. , Even the ubiquitous "Cheap ! Jack" was not lacking, with his; wonderful collection of gold !

watches and diamond rings, "to be sold regardless of cost." Many a youngster has cut his ■ eye-teeth, and learned that "all that glitters is not gold" at the hands 'of the "Cheap Jack" frater1 nity. It was observed at the Cape s ' May County Fair however, that > some of the smiling victims had no teeth to cut, and "that the young- 1 ster* were revealing, greater bat*-. I gaining qualities than their grand- ; dads. With hearty eddperation from every Section of the county, an organized effort being made to have s every Niommercial enterprise ami | in<l»*tfy\ represented .the County Fair could be made what it should ' be, a potent factor in" the developeS;ment of the county'.*' wonderful II resources.
