Forty-Third Anniversay Of The Founding Of Ocean City Celebrated On Sunday 1 NIQ1K CEREMONY HELD UNDER REMAINS OF THE CEDAR TREE UNDER WHICH THE FIRST SERVICE OF DKDICATfON WAS HELD

Forty-three years ago, 011 Sep-' IclnNr 10th, four men, ministers of the gospel and associate.! with: il,o Methodist Church, lun.le.1 near the inlet on this Island, In, ..«ii then as Peck's Beach. They came in a borrowed boat, I starting fonn I-nkc's bay in pieasahtville- Landing 011 the bore, they ma.le their way with difficulty, through an almost impenetrable tangle of brushwood and rank weeds, until they struck a narrow cow-path .which led to, the locality known as the old ramp-ground, and to the foot of a fine cedar tree, the only one of its . lei i glowing on the island. Coder the shade of the out- ; branching cedar, they dtc their , frugal lunch. I The four men came not on an . idle excursion, prompted by mere curiosity to explore the island. | Tliey came prospecting for a high- , or purpose, and with a nobler am- , Under the cedar tree, the four ( Methodist preachers knelt down ( together, and dedicated the island ( to God and humanity, for the ( founding of a Christian resort, j v here the Christian Sabbath would t Is- respected and observed. j The four founders were named ; | respectively, Rev. Ezra B. Lake, 0 Rev. S. Wesley Lake, Rev. James K. Ijike, and Rev. W. H. Burrell. £ Every year since, the auspicious event has been celebrated in the { same simple and unelToctive man- f JJvcry year the I-ake brothers .under the old cedar tree, and re-iie,licate<l the island to its orig-' ii.ut purpose. First the Rev. Ezra l ake crossed the great divi.le, fol- > lowed by his brother . Wesley. On Sunday last. Rev. James E. Ijike stood alone, the sole sun-ivor of = the four pioneers. : A small, but devout company gathered' 'ilnder the trees, to participate in the forty-third anniversary, among whom were noticed, a few of the older reshlents ef Uie rty, Mr. and Mrs. WilUam Lake, | and Capt. James Lee. " Rev. Milton George Buck, pastor " of the First Baptist Church, represented the late Rev. Ezra Lake; Rev. C harles F. N. Vogelin represented the late Rev. Wesley Like; and Rev. C. F. Winters,, now conducting a series of evangelistic services at the Auditorium, represented the late Rev. W. H. j burrell. The services opened w*»h the: i ging of Frederick Faher's battle1 cr yof the martyrs, "Faith of our Fathers," and Sarah Adam's pop- 1 tiiar hymn, "Nearer, my God to Thee," After reading n brVf portion of; the scripture, eminently appropriate for the occasion. Rev. James K. Luke gave a brief, but touching resume of the incidents associated v. ith the first landing on the island. The motive which phompted the , excursion in the first place, became very evident from Rev.

>- • I-ake's ' narrative. The four men ■s had caught a wonderful vision of j h the possibilities of the island, for : d the establishment of a Christian ' I, resort. Returning home at sunset, the b | Lake brothers related to theirl " futher, the story of the adventure; ! '' adding that the only obstacle to! h , the realization of their dream, was i - that 43 acres of the island was in j I the possession of another person, * who perhaps would not look with ' o , favor upon their project ' Mr. Lake Senior, in due session j' 1 secured the 43 acres by purchase,!1 B and the obstacle was removed, j1 "Ever since that day," said Rev. ' Lake, "every deed issued in Ocean 1 1 r City, has contained provision for! the perpetuation of the Christian , i 1 Sabbath.'* j ( ' Rev. Charles F. N. Vogelin based \ i • remarks upon the words of Christ to Nathanael, "When thou { was't under the tree 1 saw thee." I The Creator and Maker of all!' things saw the four founders of ! ' City under the tree, he said. ! God had heard their prayers of) dedication and consecration, and! ' helped them to the degree,! that the name of Ocean City, for | social and high moral excel- j ! lencies, was known and honored all j 1 the country. "I wonder," said the speaker in conclusion, "if twenty years hence, we shall meet again under this, tree, and be able to say we have: retained inviolable the traditions :

— pr = ; of the pa«t. and the Christian American Sabbath." Dr. Milton C. Buck followed with the observation, that history i was repeating itself. Twenty centuries ago Christ went over the Sea in a boat, and it ig recorded r* that the multitudes went o%i J | Him. The multitudes had_ followed the] Lake pioneers and founders. Recently at the Hippodrome Service, Rev. Buck called the roll of states, ' ami response came, he declared, ' jfrom as far as California. Ocean i Citj was known in India, for the " j third person baptized at -.he First ' ! Baptist Church, was now n mis- ' 'r!sknary in that land, n J : At the close of Dr. Burk's ad- I fc ie'dreKs, Rev. Lake started the con-;[ . grr nation in singing the old anil £ . I familiar refrain, "Buelah Land," 'a j indicative of his thoughts and R i ideals of the city and resort, he ii ti hail materially helped to establish. 1 Rev. C. H. Winter offered pray- 1 ^ i ■ er. It should be mentioned here ! that Dr. John Handley was pre- , i vented from being present through , ! sickness. Rev. Lake explained the ! absence, and expressed the hope ' . • that Dr. Handley would he favor- ' , ed with a speedy recovery. r : It might be fittingly added, that 1 1 the I-ake founders were also repi resented by Charles P. Lake, of I ! Ocean City. r.
