"The Ship America Cannot Afford To Scrap" Kiwanis Head Dr. Edwin Forest Hann FRF.n MANNE AND FRED BLACK RENDER A SPLENDID PROORAM OF MUSIC. INTERESTING REPORT OF THE DISTRICT CONVENTION HELD IN ATLANTIC CITY

The last noon luncheon of the Ocean City Kiwanis Club, was ain- , gularly interesting to all who were privileged to attend. A stirring ' patriotic address, a splendid program of classic music, by artists ■ of 'distinction, and an interesting report of the recent convention held in Atlantic City, occupied an hour in a profitable manner. One of the subjects which occupied the position of a "High < Light," in the recent Kiwanis Convention, will commend itself to' every thoughtful person; "The Unpriveleged Child." The Kiwanis International has girded itself, to defend the rights and privileges of the "Unprivileged Child." Every; child born Mo the world possesses ah unalienMile right to a good home, sufficient nutritive food, the; advantages of a good education, and opportunities to develop the attributes of mind and character, which go to the making of an useful citizen. Nevertheless even in America,1 the most daring experiment in democracy known to history, the richest country in the world .and a leading factor in civilization, there are thousands of many of its children, who are denied their rights, hundreds of whom, by force of circumstances and environment, can hardly escape from drifting' into criminals and wastrels. With the force of the Kiwanis sentiment behind a movement, indefence of the Unprivileged Child, much will be accomplished to improve its chances. it transpired also, that the Kiwanis movement has set itmtf to the task of introducing the Golden Rule into business and all the common relations of life. All admire the Golden Rule; but how , few practice it. The Kiwanis , has declared its admiration for the principles of life and conduct, inculcated in the Golden Rule, and has moreover, pledged itself, to popularize its application in a practical manner. A greater Messing to the age they could not confer. Evidently the Kiwanis movement is gaining rapidly in favor 4n the State of New Jersey. Some very few Istredacad by Director Corns. e | years ago, there were just three; - dubs in the State; totlay there are 1 s j thirty-two flourishing organiza- ' f'tions. - Prof. Fred Manne, formerly of t s the Apollo Theatre, Atlantic City, X and an Instructor of Music, tie- ' i ; lighted his audience with two bril- ■ 1 1 liantiy executed solos on the | violin, accompanied by Frank , - ' Black on the pianoforte. At the ■ i conclusion of the chief address, i - Prof. Black favored the company | a4 with a pianoforte solo. Prof. Block, it should he stated, 8 will during the coming yvinter, 0 be identified with the Philadelphia ■ 1 Symphony Orchestra, under the f direction of the famous Thadeus * Rich, and will give a series of d pianoforte recitals. e: Fretl Manne may be heard fre-j '• quently now in Ocean City, for the ■ e information was volunteered that- "' Mr. Manne has become the proprietor of the Ocean City Garage, ' : which he will operate aU the year j '• round. n The Kiwanis expressed their * pleasure, with the artistic performance of these two gifted musicians. '■ j ly a standing vote of- appreciation. ' " The chief speaker of the hour r was Dr. Edwin Forest Hann, of e i Camden, an orator who held the attention of his audience until the: J ; last word. launched from sU ports, and car- c rietl tire world's raVgo, was Rela-'li tionship — America's relationship, ' national and international, with the Jj bigger and wider world. w The day was passetl when any ;> nation could dream of insularity, 11 | and of keeping itself aloof from ;! the problems of other nations. ^ Speak as we may of avoiding for- 0 . eign entanglements, they cannot be' avoided any longer. The recent;" war had converted the world into j a a great parish. A revolution in;41 ' RtAtsia, or a famine in China, af- 1 e . I fected America as acutely as n ' s: > j similar occurrence would in Mes- '■ . : ico, 1 In view of America's reiationf ship to other nations, said Dr. sl , Hann, there were three tasks to a - which she should devote herself a - with undivideti attention. - 1. The Americanization of the ' , I alien, the man and the woman of l foreign extraction, who proposed , v make America their permanent ' home. Of the six million of male aliens p . at the present time in this coun- R try, 3,200,000 were unnaturalized. ' ' These people hail their own t papers and magazines to which v * : they strictly confined all their . reading, and therefore, had no t i means of becoming informed in a "jthe policies and principles, of e s I American democracy. a . By reason of their ignorance, 0 , these people fell easy victims to a 'T : the alien agitator. The rabid Bolshevist found in their plastic r minds, good soil in which to sow . the seeds of discontent and anar- , , chy. Consequently, instead of be- ' coming by proper Americanization r an economic asset to the country-. p 1 , of incalculable worth, the alien was f f 1 becoming a terrible menace, and c ,! peril- v • i 2. America should devote more c . ' attention to the vast army of il- a fi literates, scattered over the land. 1 Recent investigation disclosed the . appalling fact .that there are 5,- o i 500,000 people in the country over c s : ten years of age, who can neither t g read nor write. Of these 3,300,000 i

cannot even speak the English language. The average person appears not to realize. Dr. Hann continued, what a heavy financial loss this illiteracy was to the country. Statisticians have computed that the army of illiterates, represented to America a loss of over $800,000,000 annually. - Dr. Hann advocated, strongly j the establishment of a minister of agriculture, to look after our hogs, ! cabinet. We have a minister of education, to look after our hogs, ! said he; why not a minister, to look after the education and welfare of the nation's children. The third task to whichAmeri -a devote herself, Dr. Henr added, was .the Christianizing of all of its citizenship. America ha.l been spoken of as the melting pot; l.ut the melting pot was not Chris I America could not disown her indehitedness to the Christian religion. As Bob Burdetts frequently said: "The Declaration of Independence was not signed in a saloon, no not by a jugful." The part America was destined to play in the reconstruction of the world, no man could divine. To teach civilization to speak the language of peace and world amity, and to assert a moral leadership over nations less blessed and favoured, was a goal worthy at attaining and an ideal worth . striving for. mm Mrs. M.
