FOR AULD LANG SYNE TWENTY YEARS AGO ' (i THANKSGIVING ENTERTAIN- n MKNT GIVEN BY CHILDREN H OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS The premier event in the social s life of Ocean City, Twenty Years v Ago this week appears to have been the Thanksgiving Entertain- & ment, given by the children of the ( public schools. __ The exercises were of an arabi- * tioua character, and to all seeming were well rendered. ^ There is a peculiar interest in ^ glancing over the names of the ^ children who participated, some of c whom are today hohling positions n of trust, both here in Ocean City and elsewhere. No doubt many will enjoy read- ^ ing over again, the splendid program given on the occasion. Thanksgiving Song Primary PufcUs Recitation Alberta Marts * Song Roy Bourgeois ^ Rec. ' It was the intention of the promoters to have the association ' functioning before the next season, with provision made for fostering Interest in baseball, football and golf. It was also hoped to erect an up-to-date club-house, in a centrally located section of the city, In which all meetings could I* held.i business transacted, and in which tp store nil the paraphernalia associated with different branches of sport. Some of the foremost business men of the city were interesting themselves in the project. We have however, looked in vain for the consuraatlon of the enterprise. If the project had materialized, Ocean City would by this have attained to a place of first rank importance ,in the world of out of door sport. Twenty Years Ago this week, steps were taken for the installation of a gas plant in the city. The capital stock of the company, was increased to *100,000, and pledges were given that work on the plant, would l>c commenced at once, and
completed within one year. I The company had purchased a f| tract of land, on Eleventh Street and West Avenue, for the purpose. Twenty Year? Ago, the "strike microbe" appears to have infected pupils of the School. A special ^ meeting of the Board of Education been called, for the purpose of investigating, why certain young ladies had , absented themselves from the school, and to take , jt what action was deemed advisable, p, The reason given will doutlexs ir appear to Prof. Stevens, and to | tl the average student of today, as 11 something in the nature of a com- tl edy. ir It transpired that the young'01 hail "gone on strike" against 01 latin; claiming the study of the P language was "too hard, and the of constant worry and an- •!' noyance, or of nervousness." " The principle of the school ex- f1 plained at length to the members : " of the Board, the advantages to be , gained from the study of latin, ^ and after long discussion, it was decided to maintain the course of ^ study, and to "rei|uest the principal to shorten the lessons, and in cases of physical disability, to excuse the pupil from the course." . ^ The words in quotations are copied from the official report, and one wonders what the nature of the physical disability was, which precluded a pupil from the study of Latin. In the brief mention column of; Years Ago, we learn that Mrs. J. E. Boyle of the Emmett, j spending the week as thej ' guest of friends in Camden. We learn that Ex-Judge Harry! Douglas, and Alfred Cooper,, of Cape May Court Houw, were visiting Ocean City, Monday R and Tuesday. Mrs. C. Howard Sehermerhom, of Philadelphia, was visiting her sister Mrs. J. S. Rush of this city. Years Ago. The same week, R. M. Thompson ' of Philadelphia, was here over the week-end, at his cottage, Simpson Avenue and First Street. Tuesday, of the same week, Years Ago, Rev. George T.. 6 , presiding *^.Mer of the Camden District was in the city, - , attending a meeting of the Ocean ( S City Association. I Dr. Dobbins stayed at the Att glen Hotel. , Information was given forth, . also, that S. C. Golf, had closed . the Hotel Atglen, with the inten- , tion of spending the winter in the South. "Local Happenings" contains the i information, that Reuben Ludlam, . was acting as janitor of the school . house during the absence of Ed-, 1 ; ward Sack, who was ill; that Geo. • 0. Adams & Bro., were laying thci „ foundations of two cottages, on Asbury Avenue near Eleventh St.,! n for P. P. Peterson; that J.
