Publicity Expert Explains To Kiwanis Club the Art and Value of Advertising (HAS. W. ROSE YEAR OF IKHU.AM) advertising agency ENTERTAINS KIWAMANS with an instkittiy !t talk. IN'STAI.I.ATION ok (imi'hhs at niat m KETtNg
The science of advertising was very ably expounded at the last noon luncheon of the local Kiwanis Club by Charles W. Rosevear, of the Dorland Advertising 1 Agency. With statistical proof at his finger-tips, Mr. ltoscvcar loft no; doubt lingering in the minds of those who were privileged to liear his illuminating address, concern- } - ing the value of advertising. That Mr. Roscvcnr is absolutely sold to advertising he made verydear. Years of experience as a publicity expert, and the representative of an advertising agency nf national importance ami scope, have banished all fear relative to the value of advertising, Mr. Rosevear said. Advertising was no longer a luxury, but a necessity to every succcssful business. What was ' trluc of a commercial corporation ' was true to an even greater ile- < 1 gree of a resort. ( The secret of the phenoininal ( .success and prosperity whi.h has attended the resorts of Florida ' within comparatively recent years furnishes ample proof. Between Ocean City ami Florida ' said Mr. Rosevear, may be found " a stretch of country, which in" his judgment is as beautiful anil var- ' ied as any to he seen on the con- 1 tincnt. ' 1 All required is that it should Ik- * made known and advertised. Spasmodic advertising was of I little value. It is by persistent and systematic effort, that the ' greatest results are obtainable. I Mr. Rosevear gave some very c interesting figures, which reveal t how, very much more extensively advertised were other resorts than < Ocean City, yet such resorts had < by no means the advantages and i facilities for summer recreation | that Ocean-City possesses. A few years ago, Delaml spent < t ">00 in puhlicity; the lost year's c budget amounted to |7,100. Day- t tona was spending $18,000; Fort * Myers, $20,000; while Miami was ] spending $92,000. c Tampa was spending $02,000, | and St. Augustine, $39,000. t Referring to the question of tax- I ation, whether a large appropri- t ation tor advertising, paid directly ( out of the municipal treasury', reacted harmfully upon property t valuation, Mr. Rosevear repuiliat- I e<l the suggestion, and cited sev- f eral examples in proof of his con- f tention. In Miami, property vaulcs -had leaped higher and higher with , each increase of appropriation devoted to advertising. Mr. Rosevear favored strongly ^ the practice of having all community advertising done and paid for out of the taxes. * . Advertising done by private . ' subscription was of necessity > ■ spasmodic, and could not be con-, ducted in a systematic manner. 1 In fact, while he did not make any reference to It, and indeedl may not have l>een informed of it.' ' Mr. Rosevear's remarks nil tended to strongly support the scheme! of advertising formulated by the; Chamber of Commerce, and after- j wards presented before the Board ' of City Commissioners. "A eity will grow just as its advertising grows," said the speaker. The psychology behind advertising, whether of that of a private corporation, or of a city, consists in keeping It constantly before the eyes and mind of the public, until people become unconsciously convinced, it is the one thing above I aB others they need, and must sc-: cure. MAJOR HARRY nuss PASSES AWAY HERE Ocean City has lost a valuable1, friend, and the Ocean City Yacht. Club, a faithful member, in the! death of Major Harry Nuss. • For the past fifteen years. Ma- j jor Nuss has been a summer resl-| dent of Ocean City, his residence, being located on Morningsid'e ! Road in fhe Garden's section. Major Nuss was identified withj Company E, First Regiment, and wus also a member of the Vet-, eran Corps. Commercially, Major Nuss had been engaged in the candy busi- ; nesa through life. No man was more popular than he. Endowed With the rare faculty of making friends, and the stUl rarer gift of long retaining their friendship and esteem, his loss Is felt keenly in. a very large circle. Funeral services were held last. Friday, at Blair's Chapel, Phila-j delphia. Deceased leaves n widow, and; two sons, Harry, Jr., Albert, also, thre daughters. One of the . daughters is the wife of Nelson ClATk.

The coming summer will with-] i out doubt prove that Mr. Brick's; [ confidence was not misplaced, and; I ifnat his challenge was no idle At the last meeting of the t- Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Brick i explained what had l*en accom- . plisheil in his immediate vicinity; ; hereupon President Sutton api pointed him a committee of one,' entrusted with the work of ap- ' , pointing a key man in each block: through the city, the latter to on-l ■ the co-operation of his fellow i ■ residents in the City Beautiful f Campaign. In pursuance of the power vest- j ■ ed in him, Mr. Brick has selected! . keymen, who have Itecn noti- , ■ of their appointment with the: ■ following letter: Dear Sir: I You have been selected as the!

The e' plan is as follows: | "Plant Trees — Be sure they are u planted right and the proper vurs'iety, as only certain kinds grow at ! the seashore. Coal ashes or gravel should lie placed in the bottom of ; i : lie exravation at least Sin. to 12 . . in. thick. Supply good top soil to . replace the sand taken out of the hole. The cost per tree, properly ..planted, will-not exceed $4.50 each, and in group planting a slightly; p! lower rate can be obtained. "Grade & Grass — From curi> toj n sidewalk grade and sow grass - seed, as well as grade tlie ground , ' in front of your house to the side- j f walk and sow grass seed.
