A SURGEON AND A : PDE1 , The accompanying poem was written by one of the most dis- ■ tinguished' surgeons and medical scientists in America, Major Norvelle Wallace Sharpe of St. Louis, Mo. 1 For several years Major Sharpe was associated with the faculty of i Louis University, occupying - the chair in Anatomy in that in- , i stituion. The gifted scientist has i also contributed extensively to ' i various medical journals, and i while at the present time he does not conduct a general practice, he acts in the capacity of consulting surgeon to several medical institutions. Occasionally one hears or reads E. A. C< General C< 737 Asbur | OCEAN CITY • ROADS. SEWERS. BR

of a distinguished scientist inter-' erted in belles lettres; very infrequently one interested in the theology anil biblical exergesis. Major Sharpe is a notable exception. Notwithstanding the (abandon with which he has applied himself to me<liral science, he has found time to make an exhaustive study of some of the most abstrusive doctrines anil dogmas of the Christian Church, and has r. contributed to the literature of re-' ligion some very valuable theses, to I* included in u monumental encyclopedia of religious thought, and has written a very fascinating! ' study of the Immaculate Concepr tion. En passant, it might be added , that Major Sharps is the father of ' Norvellp Wallace Sharpe, associated with the Atlantic City Gaz- : ette- Review. i | The poem provokes thought. ' The utter remorseiessncss of the sea is most faithfully depicted. Analogies drawn between the sea, > and the phenomenon of death are , new; but rarely have they been , drawn with so fine an imaginative , justice as in this poem. ) We give our rentiers the pleas- j . ) ure which has been ours. SEQUEL TO FINDING OLD PAPERS IN WALL OF FIRS! NATIONAL ONE OF THE MEN EMPLOYED IN CONSTRUCTION OF THE BANK WRITES Recently we published an ac- 1 of a curious document found embedded in tile wall of the First National Bank, Ocean City. j -The document, in an excellent state of preservation, contained the names at). I ages of the men employed in the work of construcapproximately twenty-Seven We concluded our story with the , request that should the account ' come to the notice of any of the persons named, that we would lie glad to hear from them. This week came a letter in an- . swer to the request written by, Chas. P. Burrough from the city 1 of Camden. Mr. Burough's iffteie-ting letter 1 conveys additional information to supplied in the aforementioned document. The following is a copy of the letter. Camden, N. J., January 1, 1923 To The Ocean City Sentinel; I have learned through a friend of mine that your paper , in a recent issue printed a copy;] ! of a manuscript found in mak- ] i ing alterations to the Ocean | City National Bank, containing my name among others of workmen employed in the original construction work of the same, and a request that should any of those chance to learn of it, to communicate with you. I cannot at the present time, recall the entire personnel of the force employed on the work which I believe was carried on in the fall of 1896, just after McKinley's election] I recall Geo. C. Covintree*. I/>wis Rumford, and (I believe) Samuel Hurff as bricklayers. Burrough and Madara* were the contractors of brickwork (Charles P. Burrough and Thos T. Madara*). I think Benj. Fernanders* was mortarman, and Isaac Rodgers and Charles Aceoo* were brickcarriers. I have no knowledge of such a document being placed in the masonry but suspert it was ■lone by Mr. Covintree, as it
