Mahinney s the Delegates ^ Considerable light and under- ' standing into the work and the op- ' erations of tlie American legion, was focused in the course of a ' meeting held January Cth, in the ' city of Trenton, at which Adjutant Homer Saxon and R. H. Mawhin- , ney attended as representatives of the local post. Post Commander Dr. W. P. , r Haines was prevented from at- | tending, Mr. Maw-hinney acting ns ] , alternative. The meeting was addressed by t , isome of the leading Legion offi- , . cers of this, and other states, and j , : matters of momentous interest to , f the American Legion, came under t , discussion. The meeting was held at the t , State Normal School, and presided < - ! by State Commander Conlv. 1 President of the State Normal ( I was heard first, in a most I interesting and instructive address 1 ■ of welcome, after which State Ad- i ' jutant Dawson read telegram,* « - . National Commander Qws- \ j and Col. C. W. Wichersham, , i Commander of the Dept. of Con- v Announcement was made, that t Commander Owsley, is to , in New Jersey for the three j
?. days, Jan. "23-24-25. January 24, n Col. Owsley will lie in Atlantic it City and will there lie accorded the 1. reception, which Past Commander n MarNider received last year. Major George II. Putmnn. s civil war veteran, and a iliirtinl. guished author, lecturer, and pubn lisher was then introduced, and delighted the audience with his n : masterly eloquence. Major Puts' man is a remarkable man, despite the fact he is 86 years of age. r The next speaker heard was .; : Commander W. C. Speakman of '■ : Deleware, after whom. Col. Bryant of the Department of I-ahor, New e ' Jersey, spoke. Col. Bryant kept his audience '. convulsed with laughter with his ready wit. Notwithstanding the humor. Col. Bryant made it very clear, that in his official capacity, he could do much to assist the exsoldier, a thing he desired to do. Some very Interesting inside facts, concerning what the GovIemmcnt was attempting to do, i for the wounded or disabled soldier, were disclosed by Commander Renoff of the State of Maryj . land. i It became very evident as Com- i j mander Renoff proceeded, that , very little lienefit the disabled sol- i dier was receiving in the different < hospitals. The astounding rinfor- I " matlon was given, that in Maryv > ' land, some of the hospitals are loO ' cateil in wretched and delapidated | ' barracks. i Miss Curry, President of the ^ State Women's Auxiliary, pre- < sented the claims of that organiz- i ation before t)i - meeting. She t ■ ! emphasized the fact that the mem- t ' j of the Auxiliary, wa* far i 1 1 than it should lie, anil stated i she had discovered that many of c the men, were discouraging their <i 'mothers and sisters from becoming identified, while it was the (l ' duty of every Legionoirre to t ' boost the Auxiliary. | Miss Curry was then requested n present each of the four State „ Commanders, with tokens from the t Department of State, in the form of medals. Commander Callahan of New York, interested the meeting, with account of what his state was , ^accomplishing. The State publicity officer explained in detail, the manner in ' which each post could help to educate public opinion, concerning the nature and the work of the American Legion. In general the . post left the matter entirely at the
I. mercy of newspaper men, whereas <■ r each post historian, with the in- t; e formation at his command, should n v • ntrihute articles to the papers n written from the viewpoint of the Col.
