Never l>cfore in the history Ocean City High School, lias the been so many basket-ball ganv pla.ve-1 in one week a* there w ' .luring tfio past week. , On Tuesday evening, the Fir and Second Boy.-' Basket -ba Teams, played the Fir.-t and Sc1 ond Teams, of 'the Pleasantvil High School on the latter'i cour The Girls' Basket-ball Teanr-dr tertained the Pleasantville Hig School Girls' Team on the loci court, Thursday afternoon. 0 Friday afternoon, the Girls' p|ay e.l Hammonton High School Girl; Team, on the local court. And i the evening, the First and Secom Boys' Basket-ball Team, welcome to our city, the Cape May Cit; High Sehool aggregation. The O. C. A. A. conducted fou games duting the week; two 01 Tuesday evening, and two on Sat unlay. Ten games in one week is norm record, for a small place like Ocean City. O. C. H. S. Seconds Defeated In a preliminary game, the Pleasantville Freshmen defeated the Ocean City High School Second Boys' Team, the .core being 19 to 11. Robert Gordon was the whole works for Ocean City. He made ell of the 11 points, by tallying three field goals and dropping 5 fouls out of six tries from the fifteen foot mark. Also he was a big factor in the defensive work. Pleasantville also hail a star on their team. Rainio, the center, sunk eleven goals from the foul line, out of fourteen tries. Had our boys been just a little more careful in their fouling, Rainio would not have had this chance to shoot so many fouls, and the score would have been a different story. This makes a gome each for the Pleasantville and Ocean City Second teams. Our boys beat Pleasantville some time ago on the local court by the score of 38 to 18. The score: Ocean City H. S. Seconds G. Trounce Cape May At last. Ocean City High School j Boys' Basket-ball Team, has struck its winning stride. One of the fast- 1 est and most hotly contested I games of basket-ball, ever played; on the local court, took place last , Friday evening, when our boys trounced Cape May High School. ■ to the tune of 28 to 27. True, it ( was but by a margin of one point, I but so far as winning the game i- • concerned, it was as good as 109 \ to 16. Never has the teamwork, and the accuracy in passing and shooting the bal, been so well done by ; S our boys, as it was in this game, t Unlike th egame with Burlington, V there was less fumbling and in- h ferior teamwork. Our team con- A stituted a perfect scoring machine. C The game started off, with Scott Adams scoring the first field goal near the basket. Then Cherry, the Cape May guard, followed with a hawker from near the center of (j the floor. A little later the eagle p eye of Roy Johnson spied Ashburn blocking his man, Scott I Adams who was dribbling the ball o out in the opening with the speed of a Meredeth, for a chance to '< rage a sinker. Scott succeeded in fl shooting the foal. The first half '■ see-sawed. with the visitors iead 4 ing, and then the Maroon and White, until at the end of the half, H it stood eighteen to fifteen in favor « of Cape May. jjj A few minutes before the close ' , of the first half. Charles Gibb, our: b big and bony guard, sprained his ■ left knee and was forced to leave O tins floor. Tom Adams was sub-;tr stituted in his place. Tom performed well at guard, considering * the experiences he has had in this.™ position. He took the breath of " a lot of people, when he shot one from the center of the floor, and G it fell through the peach basket *c clean. The second half started off with P1 a jump, both teams "stepping on 1" it." like the first half, the score Si see-sawed back and forth. For tH fully five minutes about the mid- th die of the aecond half, the score pi stood tied at twenty-one. ' Then '« Boswell landed a sleeper from off Si at one side, and Scott Adams fol- b« lowed with a sky scraper, from the If center of the court. Ashburn came through with one, while acting as sc a basket hanger. After both sides scored a few points, making the "> score read 28 to 27, in favor of ta Ocean City, anil with but one and •tie-quarter minute to play, the local boys froze the ball; and in the midst of faint cheering from j>j hoaraed throats, and strained gt necks, caused by peeping up at the!gt score board, trampled on feet, dis- p| appearing hats, timekeeper Fitz-' p( go raid sounded the termination of , w tiie game and all was well. Ocean City had won. pc At the beginning of the second rv half, Cbariea Gibb, reentered the jjt le
y of game, thinking that he had i here • uperate.i. and that his knee w imes better. But after a few mlnut vere of play his. knee became a liuisan and ho was forced to give way Trst Fred Pfitzenmyer. a substitute, -ball Barron and Adams played tl Sec- game of their lives, each scorii rille five field goal.-. Boswell played urt. fine game, even though he 'on -en- scored one field goal. Second Tram Wins *j The preliminary to the big game was considered by a goodly number of the fair sized crowd, to be just as exciting and interesting as the big main attraction. The High ~ School Second Team walloped the ' Ca^ie May Second Team, to the " tune of 29 to 28. It was in this game, as in the main game, both " teams seemed bound to win, and first one side would be in the lead, and then the other. Captain Gordon, D. Huff, and i MaeGregor, were the outstanding stars for the local boys, the latter getting thirteen points, five field , goals, and 3 from the foul line. Bennett and Needles, were the! - shining lights for Cape May. the: latter scoring sixteen points of the ' " total score of 28. Our team had some stiff opposi- , tlon, for they had to bump up against two of the regular Varsity men. of the Cape May first team, Ashbum and Needles, who were . ineligible to play on the first team, t because of not being up in their . studies; but were permitted to j play on the second team. Our girls deserve praise for the •' way they played, considering the new material, and being inexperi'eneed compared with those of the visitors. Julia Pileggi, last year's who has just returned to school, played well and scored two field goals. Owing to the lack of practice her wind was poor, and place was taken by Dorothy Stiles. She scored one point by ar. overhead shot from field. Ijlly Flick, a Freshman, her first yea rof basket - was sent in to take Emma Stockton's place and she dodged guards and scored two field goals. In the writer's four years cxperience in Ocean City, he has '>'• never known Mr. Johnson to 1* re, absent, so that he could not offieir.ts ate for us. eld He certainly knows his business in the game, for when a decision er- arise is kfinvfs the rules so well iss that he has them "at his tongue's *n end." eH calls the fouls quickly, designates the offender, and telis •ve the nature of the foul, and then ily j grasps the ball quickly and runs ng and places it on the foul line. He never allows a prolonged discussion from Hf any player, during a game, but he is always willing to allow the plavor to appeal for his interpretation . of the rules. Moreover Mr. Johnson is always ready to produce the rules, and to explain their meaning. He is always impartial to all ' members of both teams, and last of all. but not least, he has the character and backbone to make a — decision and stick to it. 14, We al should be gald that we 1 have a man in our midst, that has the game atoheart, an IF knows our 20 i financial condition, and is always ! 0 ready to give us his services.
