Arointing t<> the calendar, ye* tenia}' »'•* l,ie first day of spring ! Howl-ver, wo need not to liavo consulted the calendar to find out if! it i- insuring spring. If we have' leen keeping our eyes open. We must have seen several indications about us. informing us of this fart. ,.f them are the number oft that have lieen seen flying : at«>ut us. 1-aat Friday morning.: at the Wesley Avenue School, sevrial birds flew down ami perched „n the window sill. Tlteir frolicking almut was quite amusing and Interesting, to the number of pupil. who saw them. Rut the biggest indication of spring, ft" artistic manner in which t lie windows of the Wesley Venue School ate decorated. All , the win-lews, both front and the tear, an- decorated with different .ire birds, and Easter lillles, set - in flower pots, cut from drawing j paper, and painted in various col- . , „r», by the pupils of the different ; | grade Tlie> decorations were put or. the windows assisted by , (heir teachers. Mi.- Edith Benedict, principal:

mid instructor in the art' work.;, in<l manual training of the We,.- . ley Avenue School, deserves con- 1 siilerahle cieiiit for her success in ; teaching her pupils .uch splendid and artistic work. Particularly is j net in which she has instilled the i spirit of the Easter time into the i mimls of her pupils. When Mis. ' Benedict was complimented for ! the decoration* she replied. "Don't ,omplin>eiit me, I wit compliment the pupils ami their (earlier. " Well, the inteerviewer lias Ui state that he Mievc* in giving credit where c relit is due. Therefore we ; will give Mis Benedict iter due credit, for we believe the idea wfis , first conceived in her mind, then j . passed on to her pupils in her , classes. However much credit is ; ( due to the pupils, and the teacher. ! for carrying out Mi-. Benedict's j idea, in such a manner of perfec- j thai. Teachers Monthly Meeting. Prif. 1 1 Stevens Delivers Address jc The monthly meeting of the | i grammar ami high school teachers j was held last Wednesday after- j r noon in the eighth grade room. ! i ,1.. k,..:. -k«.l wiijIM I „ in the high school

It was one of the most inter- j esting meetings that the teachers have had for some time. What made the meeting so intensely interesting. was the splendid talk which Supt. Stevens gave, about the new high school building, ami the encouragement lie had receiv- j ■.it m being granted the Additional } amount necessary to up the kind of building, which he had proposed , in the beginning. He told how disappointed lie was, when the ( bids acre offered a few nights before. fiiitling that they were far ( higher ihsm he had expected. TheL teachers were told that he thou- j ght the school Iward of estimate^ would be willing to grant the additional amount, making the total , $506.(160, w hich will Iw required . ( to erect the kind of n building f Ocean City will be proud of, ami a buikiing that will take <are of { the hoys and girls of our city for the next ten years. Supt. Stevens dwelt at length,., upon ihe importance of an income ' tax. ami how it would affect the ( teacher, along with other*, who will lie ohlieged to pay their share. ( The teachers agreed with Supt. , Stevens that the adoption of the Income tax scheme would be a fine thing. It will put everybody upon the same level, and will not fall to a few property owner*. The •"en with million* win be- forced t« pay their share, where at the ire sent time, are getting off payn* their share of the tax, by in- ' ftsting in boada, etc. Time did not permit Supt. Ste- J t*®5 to tell much about his trip to C'evelamJ, but no doubt he w ill teep hi* talk in store, until the ! itxt meeting. ' After a few announcements the •eting adjourned.

High School New* Widely Read and Enjoyed We have abundance of evidence hat the school and sport news 'hicl, appear In the Sentinel each 'tck, are read by the people out 'f town. Here is one instance. •M Friday noon, when the uninown writer of school news and 'pons, was journeying down i»th Hreet, suddenly a loud greeting ®n>e from across the street Mr. * looked up, ami there stood ami Mrs. D. P. Fry. proprietor. ' 'he Tray more Hotel, who were e

' standing on their veranda. Mr. ; r 1 was interupted and was informed ' i- 'hot all the news he gave hud np- ' if , pea red in the Ocean City papers. 1 o' "I have it" said Mr. Fry "for 1 v e read every word that is in them.!1 s About your school news, why I '' b j know more almut your school this * f ' past year, than I ever knew or r It j ever heard of before." 5 Such greetings as tliese gives;1 ■ ; ' he unknown writer a little more " I encouragement. There have been - times when he thought the news I was little appreciated, and felt ' u • giving up the job' and take it easy * as a good many others are doing, f The live or six have a week de- " i voted to this work, with out great ** >' remuneration, except criticism, ° I could l>e used in reading some * ; good book. But with the follow- j!' I ing mottoes in the mind of the . I I writer, he sticks to his task, and ! ijin his own way tries to give all " trie news that is fit to read and ^ ' ; hear. .. .. . si

" If we. cant write or say a go.nl * thing about anyone, we will not write or say anything at all. . 1 If we onl> do what we are paid; ■ to do, we will some .lay wake up ( ;j" ''"Ij:""-""- 1 A GENTLE REMINDER .. | Off Tuesday morning. Prof. - l ' j Keirhly called the attention of the ( I high school pupils, tu the comli- t j ''on of the rooms. ■ He said that , he noticed so much paper on the , "iflo-rs. which seem to I* used for', waste paper baskets. Continuing. , lie said, he thought, that such a , 'condition reflected on the pupils, , . and not on the teachers. He also | ^ said, that if he saw- a visitor com- } ;ing when the school was in such a , ' ; condition, he would have an ur- t gent engagement and would leave , at once. There Iras I men a notice-,] ! able improvement in the condition , "f the school since. Just a little:, : reminder was needed. g Peter Tot ten, a senior in our,t, j high school went to New York last, t i week, to take the West Point ex- f lamination. He was exempted j o [from the mental examination, his I. i certificate from the high school he- * ling sufficient. b His first impression of New Yo- ' .1 rk was. wot favorable. He cant ti why they still use "hobble ii ' skirl" cars.

s Mrs. Blundin's Generoaity Appreciated by Student* " Mrs. Elizabeth Blundin, proprietor of the Biscayne, deserves con- ' vi.lerable « reslit for the way in ' ; which she entertained the Hnddon " | Heights basket ball team, over Friday. Saturday and Sumlay. Mr*. ' 1 i Blundin gave them rooms for two night* and did not charge them a ' ' rent. She only charged them for j 8 their hoard. The visitor* came to Ocean City strong, numbering 39 in all. Thei teams were accompanied by the principal and his wife, ami the tea- ' 8 ' cher*. ' " The team* played in Pleasant- ' iviHe Saturday night, and they re- 1 turned to Ocean City after the ga- ' t me I ! It was a splendid vncntron for the visitor*. The students were 1 under 'strict discipline at all time*. . T.wo of the girls were sent home ' Saturday, to await further puni-. 8 j shment next week, for breaking 5 8 the rules of the party. ' We thank Mrs. Blundin for her 1 ' ; which she showed to- ' ' ward the guests. 8 I I 1 ' ( 'ancelled the Game With Burlington , The high school boys tiasket I lull team did not go to Burling- , ton last Tuesday night, to play the | high school of that place. Manager Fitzgerald called them up in : the morning, ami cancelled the ga- j me. Lack of funds was the reason.

The team held a cake sale the prejl vious Saturday, but it fs undere stood that it was not a great success. e — 1-4-Crencent dab Cake .Sale The Crescent Club held a cake side last Saturday, and it is repor- 1 d ted that about twenty-five dollars were realized. s Baseball Begin* April 7 h asehall Manager Thomas Willi liams, has entered the O. H ADDON HEIGHTS • BOW TO LOCAL H. S. QUINTET Adams Feature* a* Tally Star for Home Five. Barron Runs | a Good Second I The Ocean City High School Poy's Basket Ball Team closed , their season last Friday night, ' ; * hen they defeated the Haddon Heights quintet on the local court ' by the score of 24 to 18. Captain Adams was the high , scorer for the locals, scoring ten I I of the 23 points, including a trio ; '• of baskets and four out of eight '• .tries from the free mark. Barron I next in line for thfe next hon- , I j or* tallying three field goals. The ' 1 queer part of it was that Barron < started off like a house on fire and I up his three tallies in the! first four minutes of play, then ' throughout the balance of the ga- ! 1 me was unable to locate the bas- 1 ket. The game was eight minutes, S uniler way before the visitors had I chance to tally, and this was a I foul by Norris. It was eighteen ' S minutes or two minutes left to 1 C play, before the visitor* tould sc- 1 1 ore fro mthe field, and this one,, was credited to Norris. The visiI tors had considerable difficulty ; breaking through the splendid defense of the locals. It was not un- 1 til along alwut the middle of the second half, when they gave Ocean ; second nal r. when they Uceun

a scare, and when the score! stood tS to 13 in favor of Ocean City. j 1 The following Is the game pari- < in detail. Barron ran in three ' double ileckers in quick succes- I sion. Adams followed with a two , ' pointer. Eight minutes had been played when Rlackman fouled ami ■ Norris scored from the free mark. 1 Adam* scored from the free throw, i ' Clibb caged a dandy from the cen- i ' ter of the court making the score : read II to 1. Thirteen minutes ' played, Haddon Heights called | time Norris injured. For the next i ■ five minutes no one scored both « ' fighting hard. With hut '1 • minutes to go O. C. H. S. cal- | 1 time on account of Barton spraining his finger. In the last - two minutes the visitors tallied i six points, Norris ami Reeves each . I ' raging two double ileckers and I i Norri* caging two from the foule First half emied the score ( read II to 7. in favor of O. C. H. , I ' Second half starts. For five < i minutes both teams battled hard I j to tally. Gibb ringed the hoop « two pointa. Norris came through with a startler. Adams followed in quick order. Peterson I who took Stewarts place at the < beginning of the aecond half lan- ' a sleeper. In thirteen minu- a Norris tallied a ringer bring- * the score up to 13 to Ocean I ' n,..i. ic r

This 13 seemed to be an unlucky number for Haddon Heights for i they never left U. During the re- . m Binder of the game Adams, Boswell and Pfitzenmyer each scored , a field goal while Aiiams sunk 3 from the complimentary mark. Roy Johnson refereed the game to the satisfaction of both teams.; , The defeat by Ocean City in- ; • creases the list of defeats to nine i ' for Haddon Heights this year. HAMMONTON GIRLS ] WIN LAST GAME i Meet Defeat at the Oooe ef Seaaen , to the Tone of 24 to 9. p It must be hard to close a basket - ball season with a defeat. This is I » just what occured last Saturday i afternoon, when the Ocean City H. S. Girls' basket ball team, motored to Hammonton, and were de- - fee ted by the high school lassies I. of that place, by the score of 24 , -to 9. i i, ] Hammonton started right off at i - the first whistle and before the i t visitor* could get their bearings, . French the little Hammonton forc ward, had caged three field goals. - in double quick time. Steen her i - running mate came through with i a couple of ringers. Stiles caged i I ■

a one pointer which was soon fol-J lawsed with a 'double. The first] half ended 18 to ifln favor of x " Hammonton. In the last half Ocean City got r together and suceeded in holding I I their opponent* down to only six] points, while they themselves man-j I aged to tally up six points. i Well, folks, some wet night last . night, "wasn't it? You I would have f ought so, if you had j i • up to the Temple Hall. Every- j | was floating, even the old hall j i i with human beings in it. ! ! I Kveryon had their moneys worth. . * Three good games all in one even- ! . ing. No worn ter there was a record ; • crowd. , i Wc will bet there ore a lot of ( I people who will rue the day they ( t failed to be among "those pres- | rent." And we know two or three , ; . a lio will rue the day tliey were , • ' present. i ] There was but one mistake reI ported. Some one copped Prof. 1 1 rubbers. Detective Bus- . I is now on the job. »r . |j Roy Johnson said that he wished^ . . that he wished he had worn his j ( i He surely needgfi them to , ■ . cross the little Rive Rhine that was j j I and there, inside the round ( i square circle. , . There were many up* and down* v In the arena. Some took helly ; j back slides, head dives, ^ while others saw a tars. Among , few of those who participated p were, Murphy, Mangold, "Chet," ( Blaekman, Barron and some of the |, aex. p

r If Bushay had not had the hall - so darn hot, the ponds might have i- frozen over, and the players could ii have used skates. If Roy had brought hia night cap s with him, those big drops of H-20 i . which Jupiter Pluvius let loose, - j wouldn't have made such a deep > : on his ivory skull. Johnson was the iron man. Re- ! ferring two games in one evening - | pretty good, well say. ^ ! That hawker that Hersh. Hned- ! I let loose from the cenetr of I the court, had the fans on their I cheering enthusiastically. i ' . ! Thirteen seemed to be unlucky, s ■ Miller couldn't get more than 13 8 i double deckers, neither could Had- j don Heights boys get above the t 13 number. 1 ' i1 i When H. H. got their 13 thety H i only two behind 0. C At : I this time chocolate pita, peanut*, l were not in demand. Every mouth j ' l was opened, cheering O. C. H. S. to . i "gid up." They did 24 to 18. , O. C. H. S. boys and H. H. boys | 1 are tie on points each scoring 37. j ■ i At Haddon Heights score was 24 1 ( 14. '

If the O. C. H. S. girls hail lieen 1 as proficient in locating the 18 in. rims, aa they were in finding their opponents optica, there would have been a different story to tell. Emma located EL Ruth's left eye ! with her finger*, while Areen's elcame in contact with Me- ' couch's right eye. t Probably never again will there i seen on our court, a stronger, r sturdier, huskier, looking bunch ■ of girls, than were the Haddon - Heights fair maidens. » Those two, two pointers which I Julia landed, certainly made not only the fans ait up and look pl- • eased, but her brother Faul was ' elated also. We know of some >, brothers and sisters, who never - see the good thing* each other do. , We will bet that Julia will be at r the tournaments tonight, anil toi morrow night, to cheer her broI thers to victory.

l-j That deucer that Pfitzenmyer it] caged on the run, from the center .f of the court was a pippin. Who- | ops of joy rolled up from the glad it hearted fans, v | The way Barron started off . I twisting in his only three doubles,' tjull in the first four minutes of el play, Tom opened up. hi* hill nnd -. jsaid that O. II. S. might run s j up a hundred. The O. C. II. 8. boys and girls paid B. H. teams $40.00 guarantee. • only received $10.00 door j] receipts. Who said that the O. J: H. S. A. A. should have money ? ) line- we'll have to hand the I crown to P-viile. The boys wal- r I iloped Cape May 43 to 25. P-ville Jj I ' girls got walloped twice by Ke- - aftny, 64 to 16, and earlier, i i In the season 57 to 11. Oh. well,! our eight grade kiddies, could j trim the P-ville girls. I Prof. Unger's predictions w ere • I correct, last week he told his i classes just who would win in the , i State Championship. He said that ' i would trim Camden, and, ) i Anbury Park would trounce Ridgcfield, in the preliminary. He' ■ further stated that Passaic would!
