. INTERESTING STUDY ; OF M CLARINET t AN INSTRUCTIVE STUDY OF A i ' VERY POPULAR WIND 1 INSTRUMENTS,. j, i! A week or so ago Prof. Charles j . s W. Robinson, Director of the Ocean ; * City Orchestral Society, wrote a j ! very interesting history of the C Bassoon. Continuing the Beries, - Prof. Robinson this week writes i in equally as interesting and in- ! (tractive a manner, of the Clarinet. The Clarinet — named in French, • i the Clarinctte and in German, c Klarinette, in Italian, the ClariJ netto — is an instrument of four foot tone, with a single reed and < r smooth quality, invented about the i " year 1690 by Denner of Uurem- j ' The statement that this instru- , 1 ment came from the Shawm, or , - Schalm, family must lie accepted ? - only in a general way. The Eng- ' lish Shawm anil the German Schalmey, were conical tubes with dou- - blc reeds and were therefore es- ' sentially rudimentary oboes and not ' clarinets; the radical difference be1 ing the overblowing to the twelfth, ' instead of to the octavo. Any inI stramenk i ;. Mi.driiUl or conical with single or double reed, would give the same fundamental scale, with '• only a slight difference of tone ' quality. ' The present name for the single ' reed instrument, cl.rihet or clari- " onet, is evidently a diminutive of - clarino, the Italian for the trumpet ' taking the highest parts in trum- * pet bands, and clarion, the English 1 equivalent. The fingering was reorganised in IS43 and is commonly called the Bochm system, which is also ap- ' plied to the flute oboes and basson. ! It may however, be remarked here 1 that Boshm, or Klose's fingering is hardly so well adapted to this, as to the "Octave staved instrument" It removes some difficulties however, 1 at the expense of increased mech- ' anism. ! The Clarinet consists of a mouth- | piece, fitted with a single reed and ' a sylindrical tube pierced with many side holes, terminating in a ' bell. The scale comprises nineteen semi-tope*, from E in the bass stave, to B flat. As the lowest note 1 is emitted from the bell, a true chromatic scale necessitates the * use of 18 side holes as a minimum. '" An instrument of present day use, and known as the 13 keyed instrument. has 20 side holes. y The mouthpiece is a conical stop(l per flattened on one side to form e a table for the reed, and thinned to 1 a chisel edge on theother for Up convenience. The table upon which 8 the reed lies, instead of being flat, is curved backwards towards the point, so as to leave a slit about the thickness of a ten cent piece, 6 l,otween the end of the mouthpiece and the point of the reed. It is on the vibration of the reed against i ' i s I 0 ? I) 1
