Progressive League Receives Further Communication From The State Highway Engineer LETTER RELATIVE TO IMPROVEMENT OF APPROACH TO AUTOMOBILE BRIDGE— COMMITTEE NAMED TO CONFER - WITH CITY COMMISSIONERS URGING PASSAGE OF FIRE ORDINANCE

Some weeks ago a letter was receired*by the Secretary of the Young -Men's Progressive I-eague, from W. G. Sloan, State Highway Engineer, relative to the condition of the approaches to the automobile bridge. The League had called the at-i tcntion of the State Highway Department to the matter and the State Engineer has promised an investigation. At the meeting onj Monday, a further communication was received from the gentleman to the following' effect: Young Men's Progressive league, Ocean City, N. J. Gentlemen: Referring to your letter of April 19, in connection with approaches to the Ocean City-Somers Point bridge, and an investigation of : your complaint • by our Mr. Edwards, I would advise as follows: i We arc advised by Mr. Edwards I that what is desired is that these I approaches be reconstructed; 1 i must, however, advise you that b this procedure is not possible at : ■ this time. Instructions have, how- : > ever, been issued to improve cer- * tain patching on these approaches ■ which is not entirely satisfactory, I and we believe that we can in ad- v dition somewhat alter at least a ' portion of the bridge span so as to f somewhat relieve the abruptness l of the approach. Trusting that the steps which s we take in regard to this n stter r will be satisfactory until such time c as these approaches can be entirely t reconstructed, and assuring you of c our desire to do everything pos- u sible to make the highways satis- c factory to the traveling public, I ii am it Very truly yours, fi W. G. SLOAN, ti State Highway Engineer, o In another column announcement n is made of the recent visit to a: Ocean City of Superintendent D. w V. Geddes, who succeeds H. H. tl Garriques as superintendent of the y/est Jersey and Seashore Railroad ,) Company. The visitors were escorted about the city by W. E. Masney, Chair- | man of the Transportation Com- I mittee and E. M. Sutton, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. The members of the Progressive 1 League were informed that an appeal had been made to the aRil- tl OCEAN CITY \ LAUNDRY KIDS j : I VIE OO NOtTmiWI^I n I it is aune fwi- I <i I Yhdct WOMEN SHOULD I '■ ■ TH\E> SURDtN BCAK-a , p DONT let the women- g folk bear the burden ' of the family wash. o You remember you didnt ^ talk that family wash thing n over with her the day you ■ slipped her the ring. ' Automobile Blue Book. In the said volume, the statement is made g that on the roads from Ahsecon to . Somers Point a toll of forty cents A I charged. « I Mr. Paris carried the full agree- nt t j ment of the members of the lea- _ ■ igue, when he stated that the error .{would inevitable react harmfully i j against the city, to the end, that p the Secretary, Walter E. Allen, . was instructed to call attention of D , the publishers of the Blue Book p; , requesting them to take some steps u ; correct the statement. Considerable discussion and F strong protests were heanl at the meeting of the League on Monday I concerning the many violations of the Building and Health ordinanthat are being allowed to pass unnoticed seemingly all over the city. Several voiced their protest in emphatic terms against the lax- . of the officials responsible, in . failing to enforce the law apper-: taining to such matters. Instances of faulty plumbing and of neglect relative to the removal of garbage and trash were mentioned, all of which obviously militated against progress of the city. It was decided that a committee should be appointed to wait upon j SOAPSUDS J No. 4. People who work get clothed dirty. People who do not work get their clothing soiled. Both kinds have to get tm washed somewhere and both are dvhj Used enough to try ami get 'em done right. We launder all kinds of goods in the way you want 'em laundered. If you would rather have it said in another way, then here it is. We wash the workers dirty clothes and launder the other fellowrf" soiled clothing. All of which means to say Uu»t we are j wholesalers in this business. We ! wash everything and wash it right and our motto is "Please the people besides giving them satisfaction." Because this is a city of many workers and also of many in- ' dependent gentlemen, we located here instead of Wakiki, Honolulu. We got a tip from a friend of ours that the people there were composed in the main of independent gentlemen who never got their clothing soiled. So it is up to you to show us that we did right in coming here instead of you having go to Wakiki. Your washing is next thing to your eating. It is a necessity. We understand this and ! - prepared to meet your standards. White people must have cleanliness. White people have I grown used to having it. The dirt ; I shows so bad on us doesn't it? I Well! Well! I the City Commissioners upon the 1 ' matter, the committee named by 1 President A. R. Smith being. John K. Trout, Elmer Jackson Pearl and | Albert Ohtfield. The urgent necessity of the pass- [ lending the present fire zone and prohibiting the use iff combustible roof material within certain areas, came up again for deliberation. Elmer Jackson Pearl, who has evidently given the subject considerable study and thought, and who ■ some of the highest authorities , jand experts in the country upon such matters, presented an array jiof statistics which should convince j [ tlie; most indifferent or sceptical ; , of the danger arising from shingle roofs in congested areas. , At the dose of Mr. Pearls ini structive address, the .League im- ; ' mediately instructed the Secretary Walter E. Allen, to communicate' with the City Commissioners, urgthem to pass into law at the earliest opportunity the fire onii- : nance submitted to them pome considerable time past by John E. > 1 Trout. .
