AGRICULTURAL ; NOTES : Br J. A. 8TACKH0USB. I Coootr Afonl for Capo Mar Coanlr Product ion In 1918 T. J. Durell, of Belle-, ! plain, under the auspices of the , N. J. Experiment Station, made a j survey of 45 tomuto growing] farms in Cape May County. At ! Mthat time he found the average . . farm in Capo May County pro- 1 duied 3'4 toils per acre and the I highest yield per acre was II tons. I Mr. Allen G. Waller, State | Specialist in Farm Economics, has 1 recently completed further work on the economical production of cunhouae tomatoes over the entire state with special reference to earliness in planting. His figures which are given lielow were taken from 65 farms. Effect of Date of Planting Upon Yield It is quite striking thnt all to- | matocs set before May 20 produced a yield of 6.65 tons per acre, those set between May 20 and June 1, 5.75 tons, and those from June 1 to June 10, 5.54 tons. Plants set after June 10 yielded 4.06 tons. On the major portion of the farms the plants were set too late to give the highest yield. Hence, the highest yielding group was planted May 20 or earlier. It would appear that this is a practice which the individual farmer could adopt with reasonable assurance of profit. Probably not all seasons would show such marked increase in hut year after year it is likely tngt the farmer who gets his plants in early would obtain the greater yield. Consequently, he should ad- | just his cropping practice so that j it would allow him to plant earlier ! This requires hut little more labor, except possibly in the production of the plants, which can be pur-

Burlington T I County is a heavy producing crmn-i-4 ty of mnrket and canhnusc pea? eland it too has greatly reduced its <\ Mr. Stevens will endeavor to ■s control aphis by means of a dust • that will quickly liberate a nicotine gas which is deadly to all soft c bodied insects. A power duster ° will lie useil in the operation. Mr. " Stevens has further resorted to n side dressings of sulfate of ammonia (a high nitrogen carrier) 'o i drive the growth of the peas be- 1 yor.d the point where the aphis r can completely ruin the plants. " App'ications have already been I '• made on demonstiation plots at the 1 11 rate of 100, 200 and 100 pound; 11 of sulfate of ammonia per acre. It i is hoped that t?ie pea crop can lie J saved for Cnpo May County for n there are three factories dependent < 1 upon their successful growth as I well as hundreds of market gard- ' cners.who depend upon green peas I r to servo their customers at the rc- I 1 °,lK r State Veterinarian Will Begin \ ac- 1 f cinating I'igs May It j, Stale Veterinarian, Dr. Battels, t of Trenton, will respond to the reP quests of the Cape May County „ pork producers to inoculate their | r animals to prevent hog cholera.
