IN ARMS AGAINST ' CONDUCT OF POLICE J * — 3 (Continued from Page One) j, department. Mr. Welsh stated he had consulted Cheif of Police John- Cl son, and had been informed he was a doing no more than obeying the t, Mayor's orders. ■! It was then the suggestion was „ made that it might be advisable, |j to open a training school for police a officers, who knew not the way to n treat people with courtesy, use a d little discretion ia the performance „ of their duty, and not make them- s selves obnoxious. James H. - Simpson protested u strongly against the arbitrary at- a Utude certain officials were adopt- t ing. On the one hand the city was „ advertised as a family resort, and t people were invited to make their home here; yet if one dared to ( question some act, or protest against any ruling, they were told to get out "If you dont like the way we do things, get out." ' Reverting hack to the sale of candy, Clayton Haines Brick stated that Ocean City had grown to I its present proportions, by strictly ; adhering to the Sabbatic principles j upon which it was founded. People * enjoyed at the present time far greater privileges, than they did ( at one period on the Sunday. Bath ( houses were permitted to keep | open, the city enjoyed uniterrupt- | ed transportation, the sale of news | papers, ice cream and tobacco was permitted. ; In his opinion, said Mr. Brick, j the gloomy aspect of the Board- ( | walk last Sunday was the result , of propaganda on the part of cer- , tain persons, to defeat the ordi- , nance. He further added, that he , ventured to predict that if left i alone, the merchants would see ' they were defeating their own ends, and would be glad to sell what the law permitted. President Sutton differed from the speaker, expressing the wish , that some effort should be made, to induce the Boardwalk merchants, to keep their establishments lit, and open to those who desired ice cream and sofe drinks. A continuation of last Sunday's proceedings, would react harmfully aaginst ■ the city. Floyd Simms, offered a sugges- 1 tion which appealed favorably to 1 the meeting. He had been taught to think, he said, that in all forms of democratic governments, the majority should rule. They should therefore seek to find whether or not, the majority of the citizens desired the sale of candy on the Sunday. Some consideration should be given to the merchants. If they were asked to keep their establishments open, and yet prohibited from selling candy when requested, customers took offence. It was annoying to the merchants to refuse, and frequently regarded as a alight to them by customers. He suggested that something in the form of a referendum should be made, that a letter should be sent to all persons, resident and visitors in the city, from lists comd
piled by the Electric and Gas; I companies respectively. This motion met with approval, and President Sutton appointed j Ewin T. Corson. J. J. Foster and ! T. W. Mould, as a committee to draft out such a letter and tabuthe replies. Another committee was named,; I consisting of Messrs. Brick, kuchn I and Manning, whose duty it will i to wait upon the Mayor re- .1 questing him through the columns C of the local newspapers, to pub-, a clear statement of his orders e and ruling concerning bathers pro- ( , menading the Boardwalk, and chil-|t using velocipedes and thereby obviate confusion and misunder-j standing. The meeting adjourned to meet 1 1 again next Monday evening, when j an effort will be made to secure, the presence of Boardwalk merch- ' ants and the City Commissioners, further diacusse the situation.
