"AMERICAN LAWN TENNIS" DEVOTED ENTIRE PAGE ! TO STORY Ocean City and it* rounfcip*! * comments in the September ;-u:r.i<-r ? of the "American Lawn Tennis," the official organ of the United States Lawn Tennis Association. ^ This journal travels to j \ cry town and qty. not only in this ; ; , country, but throughout the world ; where the game i- played. The publicity value of a mere line ir. ; such an organ therefore cannot be ; estimated. In the September number, an en- 4 tire page is devoted to the Atlantic i. Coast Open Championship, held ' here during the week of August 27th. Two striking photographs also adom the page, one showing two of the city's soloes, and Harvey Y. Lake, to "whom the credit is due for the development of Tu^r. I tennis in Ocean City. The second picture shows a section of the court, with Herbert Bowman, i f New York, and Wrmy Brown, of St Louis, in action.
The "American Lawn Tennis," in referring to the tournament, states 1 that "the playing conditions at the attractive Jersey resort were ah ! that could be desired." A field of 125 players comprised ; the singles event, among whom were Bowman. Wray Brown; Paul Gibbous, T. C. Leonards, Samuel B. ' Gilpin, and F. G. Daniel son. Herb- : ert Bowman captured the coveted ' Tho contest in the double.- hung I between Brown and Leonards 1 flg-'-r* Bowman, and Harvey Lake. Victory "came to the former two players. Mrs. Robert Heroid, of Philadcl- . phis, won the women's singles, beating Miss Reigel. of Philadelphia. in the final. These two ladies later combined i forces and captured the women's , doubles, while Mrs. Heroid. teamed ; with Wray Brown, scored her third victory in the mixed event The tournament in itself was ■ a compliment to the city. The presence of players of such renown, was a tribute equally great . to the dty and its courts. The . advertisement value of the event, however, no amount of money could . buy. It is certain that the name of Ocean City is now well known . in hundreds of cities where prior j to the tournament it was unheard of' Another journal, known a.*' < "8ports," in the October issue, ^ contains some interesting facts concerning the development of lawn tennis in this gesort. Said the writer: A tennis t<n» nament that has in conjunct* } with it an ocean bathing beach, M i , the social enjoyment of a *ea*bore f resort form a combination which. fnwi, tk, -1 ' . . 1 I_n players' standpoint, is

A product of Ocean City. Mr. Lake conceived the idea of building a tennis centre, equipment of Which would be second to j none in the country, io the heart, ' of Ocean dty. ■ v.
