| This Week By AKTHUH BRISBANE I high wages-good times A REAL RADIOGRAM TO HANG FOR AN IDEA McADOO, JOHNSON AND FORD AB1-E BRITISH STATESMENWhutilr. 'ikes the United States prv>.spen««K^ Answer. High wages. Cytroen, the greatest French manufacturer of automobiles, says everybody in France ought to have his own automobile. The trouble "is: "in America the workman, saving one day's pay per week, can buy an automobile with tne money at the end of a year. In France it would take a Frenchman's ENTIRE SALARY for two years." If you want u good crop, put water and fertilizer on the land. « If you want a prosperous country, put good wages in the pockets of those that work. It all *. nines back to the big people ten dollars for one. If vuu are a radio enthusiast, and understand such things, you will be interested in the latest announcement. A message, receiving its only impulse on this side of the ocean, made the trip of 9,000 miles to Warsaw and back twenty times, a total distance of 360,000 miles. Thai is almost twice as far as light and electricity travel in one second. II amazes us now. We see it, and work it, and know nothing about it. Some day we'll semi messages to outside suns, ending with "please answer," knowing Jlhat at 186,000 miles a second the answer will not be lack in time for our grandchildren to read it * Eugene V. Debs says prison didn't frighten him. Right now he would "hang for an idea." That's noble, once in a while, although you i ' must first be sure that your idea is sound. For one man hanged for a good idea, ten thousand have been hanged for ideas thoroughly bad.
If you have a sound idea, don't hang for it. Publish it, repeat it, persuade others to accept it. Voltaire opposed torture of witnesses, breaking every miserable judge in one famous case, after a fight of many years. He defied Frederick the great and greater powers, and L finally died peacefully in his bed, nearly eighty-five^ years old, rich in money, adored by- the people that drew his carriage through the streets. He showed the right way to deal with an idea. That was better than poor John Brown, of Harpers Ferry, never living to see anvthing accomplished. . It takes one kind of ability to "hang" for an idea, and it takes a higher kind to convert or hang those that oppose the idea when It is right. McAdoo let* it be known that he Is in the race for President Of course he is, being the most conspicuous Democratic candidate. Hiram Johnson will be in the ring also. This is a free for all, and Hiram Johnson probably can get more votes in presidential primaries that any other Republican. Albert tasker will work for John- [ son, as he did for Harding. HgJj [ a first-class dynamo. I One of Mr. Ford's secretaries I says he wouldn't accept the nomiI nattion for the presidency. But it isn't Liebold, the real secretary, and probably doesn't mean much. Mr. Ford has his days for presidential running and nls days for forgetting all about it. If the nomination should come on the right day he would probably take it. Meanwhile,' he's starting a plant near Philadelphia, to coRt twenty or thirty millions, and hire a few thousand men at hljtfi wages. That's not had politics. • -u, nuv i'hm j/vuvitn,
Bonar Law lies in Westminster Abbey, American tourists fifty years from now will look at his grave and ask: "Who in heaven's name was that?" as they pass on to Ahe place where Pitt and his father, Chatham, lie In the same grave. SUPT. AUSTIN WILL | WARBLE "GAS HOUSE iBLUEI" IT MINSTREL CAPT. WARRIE HARRIS WILL BE THE "CARUSO" OF THE LEAGUE TROOP Rehearsals have commenced in dead earnest for the Minstrel Show to be given during the coming month, under the auspices of the Progressive League. Director John' H. Simpson is busily engaged arranging his troupe, and marshalling all the artistic talent of the community into order. At the meeting held during the latter part of the week, the officers of the Minstrel Troupe organization were elected. F. Leroy Howe presides as the promoter, Dr. J. Thomley Hughes will act as treasurer, while Howard T. Justice will assume duties as advertising manager. New talent is being added to the troupe almost daily. The latest additions include Supt James Austin, of the City Gas Co. Mr. Austin, who, by the way, made his debut years ago as a minstrel with the,. Crescent Club Minstrels of Vineland, proves to be an author and composeY. As his part in the forthcoming program, Mr. Austin will sing a song of his own composition, entitled, "The Gas House Blues." The author will warble this sad and very pathetic ballad in his inimitable style, guaranteed to produce copious tears from the eyes of a hardened politician. , Capt Warrie Harris, the Caruso of the First 'League Minstrel Troupe, will also be in the circle, and may be prevailed upon to navigate the High C, in one of his favorite selections. Leon G. Davis has also signed up. Mr. Davis had extensive experience overseas as a member of a company of entertainers. No troupe could be complete without Lew Gandy and Roy E. Darby. These two comedians will doubtless appear in one of their original sketches. In passing, it might be mentioned, that years before the Flanders was conceived, these two versatile entertainers built an ocean front hotel in superb style at an entertainment, j Costumes will be designed and - furnished by Bertram M. Darby and Robert Woolston in elabora- >
tion. So far, the costume favored for the horseshoe is typically yachting; blue coat, white punts and » shoes. » Dorsey Anderson lias consented . to act as musical director for the entire cast and program, a fact which premises that the vocal part will be of a very high order of * excellence. "Dad" Foster has woven a won-; , derfully romantic story, around one of the leading civic institutions, and some of our leading civic lights. Those who have been privileged to see the script declare l it to be a "colossal scream," anil a I sure winner from the cull go. No definite date for the show has ' r been decided thus far; but to all; probability it will be given to thej . public about the 15th of December.! ; HANS BURKHARDT CHAMPION NIMROD > • ! Return* from Hunting Trip With Fine Buck, the Envy of Other* Hans Burkhardt must be ac- ' knowledged the champjon nimrod 1 of the year. Others may frail ' ducks and rabbits, but the genial plumbing inspector goes after big 1 game. Recently, Mr. Burkhardt re- ' turned from a trip to the Adiron- ' dacks with a magnificent buck, 1 weighing in the close proximity of \ 200 pounds, the envy of every ^ gunner. Mr. Burkhardt formed a member * of a hunting party organized by 1 Dr. Snyder, of Utica, formerly " pastor of the First Presbyterian i Church in this city. Only two deer : fell to the lot of the party, the one brought to this resort being by far ' the heaviest and best. 1 The aroma of roasting venison will permeat the atmosphere for » weeks to come. 1 » Robert Smith, associated with the ' local Fire .Department, has re- ' turned fro mhis vacation, spent . with friends in Tuckahoe and Philadelphia.

FOLLBTiT, ON GROUND, ; STAKING GREENS AND FAIRWAYS OUT i If nothing unfursccn occurs to hinder progress, the first golf course on the Ocean City Country Club ground*, at Somers Point, will ! be ready for the formal opening 1 and play by next June. • ' Every effort is being made to expedite work, in readiness for the numerous persons who are contemplating upending the next summer in this resort and use the course. Although the first eighteen holes only ar ein process of making, there are abundant evidence which

W. H. Follett, the associate of i Willie Park, the world'* premier , golf architect, is on the grounds, arranging the detail work in con- • nection with the course. Almost all the greens and fairWays have been staked out, and the (ground is being prepared for turf cultivation. Some of the fairways Ueggur language in an attempt to descq'be thqjr beauty.
