• V « I U-'J'-JI B SEA ISLE CITY,Ladlam Island, IV. J. ENGINEER'S REPORT. •Sea Isl© City ia located eti the A Eat* tic Ocean, on Ludlaza IiUtd, on tho coax: of New Jct**j,ZT T»' N. lattitude, and 74* iX E. !ongitudr,&0 mileiaouth* from PbiUdrlpbia, and (A* xnllca by rail. It is lfi miles ncrtb-eoa*. from Cape May, and about tbe uni dia* lane© from Atlantic City. TLo mean temy*erature of Lud'am l*land does not vary much from tLzl of J Atlantic City, which is i'X K. Th© humidity of the atmosphere is similar to that of Atlantic City, being equally dry and salubrious. It Is well located for both a winter and luCiDrt resort, on account of its climatic advantages. ' Tho Island Is CI mile* in length, and .raric* f rem I to U miies in width, tx* j tending from Corson 'a Inlet, en th© j north, to Tow oser.d'# Inlet, cn th© ; south, and is surrounded by the Allan- I tic Ocean, Lcdlsm Bay and a r.aragaU© • channel called tLe Thoroughfare, fur* j ciaLing excellent adrantegea for £ab- { icy, sailing and Stillwater bathing. A beach ISO feet wkle extends th© i © entire length of tbe HUnd. gently j thalving, of very hard, close- packed j sand, affording a fipe natural driT© fcr j mere than C miles, ar.d unusual fscUl* ties for walking and Lathing, which are j set excelled, by any watering place on ; tho coast. In walking, or driving, ! indentation is mad© upon th© air.d, ; affording, in this res pi-ct, a striking : contrast to many other teaches, where ; tbe sand is loose azxl trt-acheroua. Th© advantage© the beach afford* fen bathing, are excellent, there being so under-low perceptible, ar.d in this r©* rpect peculiar. Tho bottom descends ac gradually, that shallow water extends a great distance from the shore. In bathing, no rope© ©ra required, and It Is saf© for wcinen and children. Li is I efficiently north of Delaware Bay to fce entirely free from the mud of the bay, sod bathing can always U had in clean, dear water. Tlie "fast land" cf the Island consists of low bills and ridges, w:lh level por1 ions of sand, which are found by actual surrey to vary from 2 tret to 27 feet, tb© highest in elevation,; above high water. Th© meadow lands are sever overflowed by high water, except by storm tides, which are of rare occur-ence. The abundance cf game and fish in th© vicinity has mado th© Island toe years a favorite resort of sportsmen. The inland liar, known as Ludlam Bay, affords eaf© still-water bathing, having a gently shelving there, and also saf© yachting, and abounds in fish, oysters, crabs, clxtn*, Ac. l)n© portion of It is only 12G0 feet from tb© tea beach, so that on one aid© surt-baihing can bo had, and upon the other tido still-water bathing. The sit© selected for So© Isle Oty ts on th© northrro half or th© Island ; extending to the centre anu then southwardly. It will hay© a frontage on the AUaa tie of three miles, and extend inland to Ludlazn Bar and tho Thorough far©, along which it is practicable, and it is projtoscd lo lay out and construct a carriage drive for lb© distance of xner© than two mile©. It is pro pee ed to protect the City from high tide, by © substantial sea wall on the two aide© tnost exposed, and by embankment* on th© remainirvg side©, which can be done at a moderate expense, considering the economical and other advantages. Absolut© security will thus be obtained against encroachments be the sea, that nave occasioned ronrh daman© at Capo Mar, Atlantic City, Mcnmoath Beach, Manhattan Beach, and oilier place©. No other aeaside re©oct at lb© present time, has the protection that is proposed for thl* place. The Island is uninhabited ) there being no house* on it except two Goveminent Stations, and no ceo-pools ; tlie war b clear for carrying into cpermtoon a thorough system of sanitary regulation ; such as rou propose under Die supervision of an efficient and experienced sanitary engineer. Tb© Island can be rety eaiilr connected with th® West Jersey R. K., by a short branch road from 4 \ to 5 mil©* In lencth. there "being but a narrow Thoroughfare to crcwas with abrklre. A Government Light bouse should be established cn this Island, as numerous wreck© here occurred on it, and by a little ekpens© on th© part of government In the construction of jetties, two excellent harbors can be established on th© north and south ends of th© Island, at Corson *» and Towasend's Inlets, which would becoro© Important commercial point* by connection with railroad, and © aaf© re Tug© for ▼*©**!* la storms. The plan Upon which you propo©© to lay out th© City Is calculated to subseVre the purpose© of con real use©, health and beauty.
