— ■ SEA ISLE CITY, Ladbn Island. Y J. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Saa Ule City u located on tha Atlantic Ocean, on Ludbtn Island, on (14 eos»t of New Jersey . vt yl' K. btfitudr, and 74* 4 T E. longitude, 60 mile*aouihaa*t from Philadelphia, and 04 j mile* • by rail. It b 1$ mil** north «wt freed Cape May, and about the aama dielance from At Untie City. The mean temperature of Ludlant [•land doe* not vary much from that of Atlantic City, which U 62* Y. Ihe humidity of the atmosphere b similar lo that of Atlantic City, being equally dry and aal uUkow. It b wt II located for both a winter and auznuieff , reaort, on account of iu climatic ad«anI Ugea. The Island b 61 miles in length, and varies from f to 1[ mile* in width, extending froiu Corson's Inlet, on the north, to Townsend'a Inlet, cn thSN, aouth, and u surrounded b> tha Atlantic Ocean, Ludlr m Bay ard a navagaLle channel called the 'i boroug bfa^, furniikibfi excellent advantage* for fbhin^, sailing and Stillwater bathing. A beach 130 feet wide extends the entire length of the l»bt»d. gently shelving, of very hard, cloae-ywcked sand, affording a fine natural drive U* more than 6 miles, and unusual facilities for walking and bathing, which are not excelled, by any watering place on the cewM. In walking, or driving, j indentation b made upon the unit, affording, in Ihw respect, a striking | contrast to many other beachea, where the Mini U loose and treacherous. The advantage* the beach affords fen bathing, are excellent, there being no underdo* perceptible, an<T in thi* re- < «pect peculiar. The bottom descends •o gradually, that shallow watar exj tend* a great distance from the *hore. 1 In bathing, no icpea are required, and it to safe for women and children. It b mfficicntly north of Delaware Bay to be entirely free from the mud of the bay, and bathing can *lna)» be bad in j slean, clear water. The 'Tast land" of the Island ccnswti ' of low hilb and ridges, with level por> I (ion* of sand, which are found by actual i survey to vary from 2 leet to 27 feet, I the bigheat in elevation, above high ' water. The maadow lands are never aver flowed by high water, except by storm tides, which are of raar occurrence. The abundance of game and fish in ; the vicinity ha* made the Island for years a favorite reaort of sportsmen. The inland hay, known aa Ludlam Bay, aflordm Mile still water lis thing. I having a gently ahelving shore, wr.d j also safe yachting, and abounds in fish, | oy»ters, crabs, clams, Ac. On* portion M A >* only 131) feet from the ws ' beach, so that on one aide surl l-atliing 1 can be had. and upon the other aide { tlill-water bathing. The site *elected for Sea Isle Oty is on the northern half of the Island ; extending to the centre and then southwardly. It will biro i frontage on the Atlan tic of three miles, and extend inland to Ludlam Bay and the Thoroughfare, along which it b practicable, and il b proposed to lay out and const met a carriage drive for the distance of more than two miles. Il b pro|»osed to protect the City from high tide, by a substantial sea wall on the two sides most exposed, and by embankments on the remaining tides, which can be done nt n moderate expense, considering the economical and other advantages. Absolute security will thus be obtain ad against eneroaehmenU by the sea, that have occasioned much dsmare at Ope Msy„ Atlantic Citv^. Monmouth * Beach. Manhattan Beach, and other places. No other seaside resort at tha | present time, has the protection that w i proposed for thb place. Tne Island b uninhabited ; ttowv being no house# on it except two Government Stations, and no oca* pools ( the way b clear for carrying into opernteon a thorough system of sanitary regulation ; such aa you propose under the •uparvbicn of an efficient and experienced sanitary engineer. The Island can he vety easily connected with tha West Jersey R. L, by a short branch reed from 44 to 5 miles in lencth, there being but e narrow Thoroughfare to croass with a bridge. A Government Light-house should be i established on thb Island, aa numerous wrecks here occurred on it, end by a Utile expense on the pert of government in the construction of jetties, two excellent harbors can be establbhnd on the north and south end* of the Island, at Ootvoo's and Towasend's t inlets, which would become Important commercial points by connection with m lroad, and a safe refuge for veeeak ia atonna. The plan upon whieh von propose to lay eut the Ofry b calculated to subserve the purposes of convenience, health and beauty. With proper railroad taeffitiea. and lot* offered at a reasonable price, I do not see why thb place should not be eome aa great a reaort as Atlan'D Oty, bv reason ol Ks proximity to I'hilsdeL pitta, and the cltarecter of the beech. And when the sanitary qUsetion tt taken into consideration, t plana of •von greater resort. The West Jersey Railroad eon make the *emc time to Sea Isle City from rtuladelphta. m to Atlantic CH*. ^ Reepertflilly, H F t RRAN D, iTnef SnginMA
