Sea air is found to be of as much importance to the bealth in the Win tor as in the Summer, particularly for
many complaints; the result is that the wealthy flock to the seashore in the Winter, and the Winter season is going to be made a special feature at Sea Isle City. — Most all of the bouses are built with this object in view. They are double boarded and with felt lining. Mr. Groves, Mr. Kinuse, anil others have decided to keep | their houses apes the year round. — Coming hack to the first idea, this feature enubles the owner of n cottage to rent it in the Winter, after having the use of it in the Summer for enough to pay the interest upon his money ; and view ve&rsi. anv ege — ¥@p What is wanted at Sea lsle City : There is so much building and lin prove: ment of all kinds going on that more mechanics, | laborers and | (dama — are wanted; also a good blacksmith and wagon repair shop ; | two or three riest otass livery stables; Some man with abqut~20 small boats, to «ail or row about the thoroughfare near the brhlge th Ludiam‘s Buy ; | Sercral clam bakes every day upon the beach ; about 10 more chotela, each to | sccommodate ‘about 150 people. veeme~oo ~~ @if # --- W@y Considering the fret that this is about the anniversary of Sea Isle. City, it would perbapa be in order to say something | in the | connection-both retgoapective and | prospective. | Two years ago on the second of May, the first eale of lots took place in Philada. Att at time it was a barten, and no one with ‘ordinary conception could see anything promising in the prospect. ‘But afew who had confidence in the, founder, attended this sale and bought ‘the lots there‘ offered, at a nominal price. — Although the restrictions "to"! Build ware not placed on these lots, many have ione so, thus showing that they were not mere speculations, but 1 ‘who haid the interest of Sea Isle ahanged hands however at prices nm. Soar to six times the price paid, The
we have in the immediate future a pros pect of oliureh ans school facilities, the bajiding is going steadily on, and the timpe is not far in the future when older seaside resorts may look on us as a rival | of no mean pretentions; and perhaps right here it w uld be well to look into the secret of all this success, as there can be no effeot without a cause. — We hardly know which to put first, the location or the founder. Of course its elQability to Philada., and the facilities for rewching it may be an important factor, but the experience of Mr. Landis in City buclding in equally as miportant, wod when we combine these two with | the fact that we bave the finest strand | | vo the const, it is perfectly clear that the raped growth of Sea Isle is not pltenomenal, but the result of patural circumsBimees. — 1t cannot be otherwise.
A NEW CITY BY THE SEA
a worbrEFDE ChaNoR # inew twoo Vbaks matt: mabe af sha sLR CHPY. Correapondoner of the Pluie a Forse. Bea dsce City, May — Flos new eoinpetiter for Summer patronage is making eapid strides. lt is only iwo years annee the enterprise was rtirled, on what wis a lonely, neglected «pot, where a | magnificent beach dual been pounded by the waves since the chen of creation, and which might have con: tinued indefinitely but tor the growing tendency to flock to the seaside now, during all the lciure moments of, ai leat, the heated term, | l is not neces sarily to bo a rival to other resurts, us millions of people are imorant, as yet, of the pleasures of a life by the ocean wate in hot weather, and, us they come to appreciate it, every available spot on this Jersey const will be in demand, Sea l«le City is an outgrowth of this demand, — Two youre ago it hrd only a paper existence a« a health resort -1 do not say Summer resort, because people ate earning that the seaside has advan: tages oven in Winter. | Thon it was a conception only — now it is a realization. One is astonished in getting out of the ears that so much could bave been done in so short a tint, in the face, too, of many disadvantages. | There was no railroad then, nor yet a wagon road. Both had to be built. and both ure built now, as well as about a hundred houses, — As they are scattered largely on many streets and along the shore, most strangers will extimate the num bor at a bigher figure, but actual count, I am told, places the number «t a little below a handred, | But they will not stay long at that figure. | Workmen have been bosy ali Winter, and the de. mand now increases, 0‘ consse,
K0 MUsRROON GrowTit. Except in its remarkable beach, it cannot be said that Nea late City has many attractions. | Scenery is wanting ; but that is not remarkable for the | Jersey Const. — But, while the old Sammer resorts grew up without plans, and have some serious evils connected with them, particularly such as related to drainage, this young place is laid out after a rtudy as thorough as that given to the build. ing ef a-railroad. | Ite growth will not be "mushroom" in any sense except shat of rapidity, | As people go to the
seaside primailly Tor health, and Tem porary freedom from care, the first consideration in laying out the place was given to its healthfuilness in the way of. drainage. | The want of proper Erainage | \ s the dark, invisible fend that threat \ ens city life everywhere, and not a faw, also, of what are calied health resorts. Mr George F. Waring, the best an thority now en drainage in the country,. has charge of the system, and, as ho be:. gins with the b&ginning, no‘ fears neod | be entertained as to bis sucoess. | The natural lay of the land is low, hke that of Chicagh, but the difficulties in the way of inprovement are not a tithe | of those which Chicago hns mastered. 1t« atrocts are neat and tasteful, and thei ornamentation also, | The lots are al P" with stipulations na to the character of the buildings, so that the umaglaly rookeries of the older resorts are. not to offend the eve of | taste here. — The buildings alremdy erected are of a class that meet the requirements. | They sre comfortadle, tasteful and | picturesque, The great mass, of course, are. cottages for Summer res.dences the rest sra fro tels, boarding houses and the other paraphernalia needed at such a place to make life pass stong smoothly. The ourat attkactio® or vik place. Bat the t attraction, the one that overiops ail others aud makes them sutaidiary to it, is the beach. — 1t is hard ta eamprebend how iyoould be improv wd. It bas a stretoh of six and a fourth miles, a width of 150 feet over which the tideetibe and flows, while the sand I is aothard that the feet of horses and meg hardly make an impression, white thedlgpth af the water is so grodual that tisitors can wade out many | rods into the surf whhout rapes, and with ne fear of any | treacherons . anderiow.; Thebe is an inland streum also which da still- water bathing for those who prbabide rol dpi leaday® an wddif tion, partioula or | wae : még, ehildron and invalids who may ‘nowlike the surf..
