IH . i! SEJ L_ — JJ 1* SEA ISLE CITY, Leilas bland, Y J. ENGINES'* REPORT. 8*a Ulu City is looatad on tb« Atlantic Ocean, on LudUm Itiaftd, on tun coast of New Jersey , 39* t7' N . Uttifude, ind 744 471 E. longitude.50 miles todlbM*t from Philadelphia, and Mf miles by roil. It is 18 miles north-enei from I Cape May, and about the am die lance from Atlantic City. The mean temperature of Ludlom ' Uland does not very much from that of Atlantic City, which u 52* K. The humidity of the stmoephere m similar to that of AtUntic City, being equally dry and salubtioua. It ia w*U located for both a winter and itttnmvf reaort, on account of iu climatic advanThe laland i* 6| mile* in length, and varies from | to 11 miles in width, extending from CoraotTa Inlet, on the north, to Townsend'* Inlet, on the *oulh, end ia surrounded by the Atlen- , tic Ocean, Ludlem Bay and a navagabl# channel called the 1 horougbfare, furnishing excellent advantages for fishing, sailing and atillwater bathing. A beach 150 feet wide extend* the entire length of the laland. gently > shelving, of very hard, cloae-pecked tend, affording a fine natural drive for • more than 6 miles, and unusual facilitie* for walking and bathing, which ere not excelled, by any watering place on the coast. In walking, or driving, indentation ia made upon the uand, affording, in tbw rtwpect, a striking contrast to many oilier beaches, where tbr uand i» lo«*r and treacherous. The advantage* the beach afford* fot bathing, are excellent, there being no under-low perceptible, and in tbw respect peculiar. The bottom descends so gradually, that shallow water extends a great distance from tho shore. In bathing, no rope* are required, and j it la safe for women and children. It ia sufficiently north of Delaware Bay to he entirely free from the mud of the buy, •nd bathing can always be bad iu j jlean, clear water. The "fast land" of the Island consists of low hills and ridges, with level por t ions of sand, which are found by actual survey to vary from 2 leet to 27 feet, the highest in elevation, above high water. Thu meadow lands are never even flowed by high water, exedpt by storm tide*, which are of rare occurrence. The abundance of gam* and fish ia the vicinity has made the Island toe veers a favorite resort of sportsmen. The inland bay, known aa Ludlam Bay, aflotda sate still water bathing, having a gently shelving shore, and slso safe yachting, and abounds in fish, oyster*, crab*, clam*. Ac. One portion of it is only 1200 feet from th* ae* beach, so that on one aid* suri-hathing can he had. and upon the other aid# still-water bathing. The aite selected for Sea Isle City ■ on the northern half of th* Island 5 extending to the centre and then southwlrdly. It will hare a frontage on the Allan tic of three mile*, and extend inland te Ludlam Bay and the Thoroughfare, along whioh M is practicable, and it is proposed fw by out and const met a carriage drive for the distance of more than two mile*. It u proposed to protect the City from high tide, by a substantial am 'Wall on the two sides most exposed, and by embankments on the remaining •idea, which can be done at a moderate expense, considering the economical and other advantages. Absolute security will thus be obtain ed against encroachment* be the sea, that have occasioned much damage at Lhpe Mav, Atlantic City, Monmouth Reach. Wsnhattan Beach, and other place*. No other ueaside resort at the present time, has the protection that b proposed for this place. The laland b uninhabited} tliere being no houses on it except two Government Stations, and no cess pool# \ the war is clear for carrying into opera t*on a thorough system of sanitary regulation ; such aa you propose under the supervision of an efficient and experienced sanitary engineer. The Uland can be veey easily connected with the West Jersey R. K-. by a short branch road from 41 to 5 miles in lencth, there being but a narrow Thoroughfare to croans with a bridge. A Government Light -boose should be e#tehli«bed on this Island, as numerous wreck# heve occurred on it, and by a little expense on the part of government in the construction of jettiea, two excellent harbors can be established on the north and south ends of tba Island, at Cor ton's and Towws^nd's * Inlets, which would become important com mercial points by connection with railroad, and a sale refuge for vessels in stbrms. The plan upon whinh you propose to lay out the City B calculated to sub serve the purposes of oouvsuiauca» health and beauty. With proper railroad facilities, and lots offered at a reasonable price, I do not see why this place should not be- , come as great a resort ss Atlantis '"Tty, hv remain ol its proximity to Philadelphia. snd the ehavoever of the beach And when the oanitary question «a taken into «nd*Hst»o. a place cf •ven greater reeev4.
